When CC arrived at the sanctuary, there was a quiet mix of curiosity and concern surrounding her story. No one knew exactly how she would respond to a new environment or unfamiliar faces. Kristine braced herself for a timid and withdrawn cat, expecting it might take time to build trust. Instead, CC revealed a completely different side almost immediately. She leaned into gentle touch, sought out attention, and showed a soft, affectionate nature that was impossible to ignore. Beneath her physical struggles was a loving spirit that had simply been waiting for someone to see her.

Seven months ago, a shelter partner reached out to The Big House Sanctuary & Rehab in Ottawa, Canada, asking if they could take in a special case. That cat was CC. When Kristine welcomed her, she anticipated a withdrawn and fearful animal. Instead, CC surprised everyone. She was affectionate, gentle, and eager for connection. Her challenges were not emotional, but physical.
CC carried extra weight that made even the simplest movements difficult. She watched the other cats play, climb, and explore, clearly wanting to join them. But her body would not cooperate. After only a few steps, she had to stop and rest. The frustration was visible. It was heartbreaking to see a cat so willing, yet so limited.
Kristine knew that helping CC regain mobility was the first step toward giving her a normal life. Something as basic as using the litter box had already been a struggle for her. That was one of the reasons she had been surrendered. But with a simple adjustment, everything changed. By introducing a litter box with a lower edge, CC was able to use it comfortably almost immediately.
That small success meant everything. It gave CC a sense of independence again. It also marked the beginning of her journey toward better health.
A Journey Back to Confidence

Before moving forward, Kristine made sure CC received a full veterinary check. Despite her size and unsteady movements, the vet confirmed that CC was otherwise healthy. With proper care and a structured plan, she had every chance to improve.
The weight-loss journey began carefully. While most cats eat about 100 calories a day, CC needed a gradual approach. The vet recommended starting her at 250 calories daily, then slowly reducing it over time. Portion control became essential. Every meal was measured, and extra snacks were strictly avoided.
Progress did not happen overnight. At first, even gentle activity was exhausting for CC. She wanted to engage but lacked the stamina. After just a few steps, she would pause, catching her breath. It was clear she was trying.
Then came a breakthrough.
The team noticed that certain toys sparked something in her. When a catnip toy, that yellow catnip banana that so many cat parents know, was introduced, CC’s personality lit up. Her eyes brightened. Her movements, though small, became more eager. Her banana toy was the motivation she needed.
From there, they built on what worked. More toys, more encouragement, and more patience. Little by little, CC began to move more. Each small effort added up.

As the weight started to come off, something even more important changed. CC’s confidence grew. She no longer hesitated as much. She began to explore her surroundings with curiosity instead of limitation.
Today, CC is no longer defined by what she cannot do. She is discovering what she can. With every step forward, she is becoming the cat she always wanted to be.
Her journey is far from over, but the hardest part is behind her. Now, the possibilities ahead feel endless.
