“Special Day for Special Dogs” Showcases Joy and Determination in Rhode Island
In Foster, Rhode Island, dozens of dogs with special needs proved that disabilities can’t hold back determination during the annual “Special Day for Special Dogs” event hosted by Vintage Pet Rescue on October 19.
More than 30 differently-abled dogs came together to participate in joyful competitions that celebrated their abilities and resilience. The lineup of events included the Dog Wheelchair Race, Three-Legged Dog Races for both small and large breeds, the Super Senior Race for dogs aged 17 and older, and — for the first time ever — a Blind Dog Race.

A family in Seattle dropped their dog, a black lab named Mitch, off at a local kennel one day, not expecting anything unusual to occur. But Mitch’s stay at the kennel ended with an employee brutally kicking and punching him – to the point of death.
Spectators cheered as the participants dashed, rolled, and trotted toward the finish line, tails wagging and spirits high. Many of the competing dogs were rescues, each with a story of survival and perseverance. Though only three winners from each category received medals, the event organizers made it clear that every single dog was a champion.

The fun didn’t stop at the races. The event also featured a Canine Costume Contest, where pups competed in categories like Best Duo/Group, Best Homemade Costume, and Punniest Outfit. The creativity from participants made judging difficult, with Vintage Pet Rescue later sharing on social media, “We loved every single one of them.”
Founded with the mission to care for senior and special-needs dogs, Vintage Pet Rescue provides comfort, medical care, and forever homes for animals who are often overlooked in shelters. Events like this one highlight the organization’s belief that every dog — regardless of age or ability — deserves to be seen, celebrated, and loved.

The day was filled with laughter, applause, and the kind of unconditional love that only dogs can inspire. In a world that sometimes overlooks imperfection, the “Special Day for Special Dogs” reminded everyone in attendance that true strength comes from the heart — and every tail wag tells a story of courage and hope.
