Just like people, dogs can benefit from gentle movement and relaxation exercises. Qigong-inspired activities may help improve your dog’s balance, flexibility, and body awareness. These gentle exercises can be especially helpful for older dogs or those recovering from injuries, as they don’t put stress on joints like high-impact activities might.
The calm, focused nature of these exercises can also help anxious dogs learn to relax and concentrate. Many dog parents find that their pets seem more centered and peaceful after these gentle sessions.
Simple Qigong-Inspired Exercises
Basic balance work is key. Have your dog stand still while you gently lift one paw for a few seconds, then switch to another paw. This helps improve their body awareness and core strength.
Try slow, controlled walking exercises. Walk your dog very slowly in straight lines, encouraging them to place each foot carefully and deliberately. You can also practice gentle backing up or side-stepping movements.
Incorporate stretching by encouraging your dog to reach for treats placed at different heights and positions. Always keep movements gentle and never force anything that seems uncomfortable.

Begin with very short sessions of just 5-10 minutes. Focus on creating a calm, quiet environment where both you and your dog can concentrate. As with any new activity, patience and consistency are key.
Always consult with your veterinarian before beginning any new exercise program to ensure it’s appropriate for your dog’s individual needs and health status.
