Honest and heart-warming account of the highs and lows of life as a vet, by lovable TV star Rory Cowlam.

Rory Cowlam, otherwise known as Rory the Vet, has had a passion for animals for as long as he can remember. As a young boy, growing up in the countryside, he fell in love with the creatures that could be found both at home and in the neighbouring farms and fields. There was never any doubt in his mind as to what he wanted to do when he grew up.

Now Rory’s dreams of becoming a vet are a reality. He works in a busy London practice where his honest and emotional relationships with the animals and their owners have made him the relatable and approachable face of veterinary work. But, as Rory describes here with a mixture of his trademark openness and humour, what he couldn’t have known as a small boy with his heart set on becoming the next James Herriot, was what becoming a vet really entails.

In an era when doctors and nurses are talking more openly about the realities of saving human lives, Rory shows what a vital service vets offer in caring for the animals that often form the very heart of the household. He describes the demanding experience of veterinary school, and offers a very human take on what it’s like to treat animals, and the little talked about mental health implications that this pressured life or death industry holds.

This is a frank and heart-warming account of chasing a childhood dream and learning to love the reality.

    Refreshingly Honest
It is rare to find a book about the veterinary world that also appeals to the general public. The stories are hilarious and (in some case unfortunately) an accurate representation of the range of cases seen by vets on a daily basis. It discusses mental health and the importance of compassion in a way that is so often ignored. A great book for pet owners to understand a little deeper into the life of their vet, but also for all workers in the veterinary field to realise that they are not alone. Eagerly waiting for the next book!

I loved the book!! It had me in both stitches and in tears (more the former than the latter!) and I also learnt lots. I found the writing style engaging, captivating and easy to read. It was the perfect book to chill out with. Rory, do please write more, you know, between vidivet and your vet practice and dog walks and … life?! 😂😂 I grew up on James Herriot and the saddle club among other usual suspects. I love a good vet book!!

What a breath of fresh air! This book is written in a way that’s open and engaging; Rory’s warmth and absolute love for animals and his profession bursts from every page. The insight he gives into the working life of a vet had me laughing with him and also understanding the despair he has at times experienced and witnessed in others. Rory tackles some difficult mental health issues with honesty and in doing so will hopefully raise awareness generally. Any aspiring vet would surely benefit from reading this book as would many others. I picked it up intending to have a quick skim through and read properly at a later date but couldn’t put it down and finally finished it in the early hours of the morning.
