How to Stock a Pond or Lake

To properly balance your pond, you should stock your pond with three prey fish, like perch or bluegill, for every predator fish, such as bass. This pond stocking strategy will ensure that predator fish will have a bountiful selection of prey, while still giving the prey fish a sporting chance to mature and reproduce.

When you first stock your pond, we recommend adding some fathead minnows to feed the predator fish while the prey fish become established. Keep in mind that catfish will have little effect on the prey-to-predator ratio as they are more likely to stick to themselves at the bottom of the pond.

Tips on Feeding Pond Fish

To maintain a natural balance in your pond, we recommend stocking a good ratio of prey to predator fish. It’s also important to create proper fish habitat in your pond to enable smaller prey fish and minnows to reproduce and naturally maintain the food supply.

If you’re trying to help them grow quickly so you can use your pond for fishing, supplemental nutrition is key. Our Game Fish Grower pellets make great pond fish food for bluegill, bass, trout, and more. Packed with high amounts of protein and vitamins, the food encourages growth and provides balanced nutrition to increase resistance to common diseases.

Why Does Water Temp Matter?

Water temperature will have an effect on how much your fish will eat. As the water temperatures start dropping in the fall, fish will eat less and will eventually stop feeding until spring when the water warms up. Only feed your game fish when the water temperature is above 50°F (10°C).

When temperatures become colder, fish are almost in a state of hibernation and will live off their stored body fat until spring. Once water temperatures are above 50°F, start your feedings again. Feed your game fish up to two or three times per day, but do not exceed the amount that fish will comfortably eat within a five-minute period.

    Good fish pellets
I have been using these pellets for 3 years now, and the bluegill in my pond love them. I use the pellets from late spring until the fall and it has helped the growth of the fish. I now have bigger and healthier bluegill which so produce better offspring to feed the bass.

    Pond Trout love it!
I have a small pond with trout and they love this food. The go bonkers when I through it in the pond. They seem healthy and have a very good growth rate. The size is nice too because it is not too small and it floats smaller than the 3 mm size so the fish can get it before it floats away. The empty buckets after buying more food are also quite useful as well.
