Great book that covers plenty of details
I used to have horses growing up. Now, one of my young sons is very interested in them. So, I bought this book after looking at several others. I wanted something that balanced showing plenty of pictures with sharing good information, and I wanted something that appealed to a beginner. This book is great. It has enough pictures to keep his interest while giving all kinds of interesting information. In fact, even I am learning new things (such as the coloring variations for different breeds) as result of the research that’s been done in the last couple of decades! To start off, the book goes over general horse information and then starts to get specific with colorings and coat patterns. After this, the book profiles a number of breeds more specifically with pictures for each entry.Prior to buying this book, I combed the local bookstores looking at various books on horses. The rest were either too light on both information and images or were very heavy on the information and had little in the way of photographs. For us, this is a “just right” size.Plus, the physical size of the book is such that it is easy to take along when you’re “out and about”. The binding is sturdy, as well. Of course as a “field guide”, one would always hope that it would be. However in other subjects, that hasn’t always turned out to be the case. So, that’s why I share what would otherwise seem obvious.

    Not useful for beginners
This book has lots of nice pictures but doesn’t help me learn how to tell one breed from another. It is better suited to horse breeders, as most of the information tells you what breeds were crossed to make up another breed. I was hoping for information on the physical differences between breeds – size, shape, body proportions and distinctive body characteristics so that I could tell by looking at them which is an Arabian or a Morgan or a Thoroughbred or a Quarter Horse, etc. But instead the book focused mostly on horse colors (which don’t usually coincide with particular breeds) and ancestral lineages (which don’t help me tell one breed from another when I look at them). I was disappointed because the name implied that the book would be like a bird identification book – that it would help me tell the breeds apart by looking at them. It doesn’t do that at all.

Good information on many different aspects of horses
I really love this book. It includes a lot of things I already knew but many more I didn’t. The photos are georgous and helpful. If you want to know more about horse basics this is a good book to start with.

    Quick-reference book
If all you want is a brief summary of each horse breed, this book is OK, however it is more of a starting point for researching as it does not have much information. I reference it now and then as I have it on my phone.

    Very helpful and organized,
I think this book is very interesting. It may not have EVERYTHING to know about them, but it did have all the of the more common breeds, colors, and markings. It would be good for curious people or your having trouble of what horse to get.

Interesting book, aderssing comprehensively horse races : besides pictures, some drawings could have been helpful to identify and distinguish breeds. It is lacking unfortunately and we have to be content with pictures. Text is ggod, but high density make it a bit difficult and unappealing.
