Tips for Attracting Backyard Birds

Offer food year-round. Different species will visit your feeders each season, and you will be able to observe the growth of fledglings as they mature into young adults.Vary the styles of feeders in your backyard. Include a platform style feeder for ground feeding birds, a hanging feeder for perching birds and a suet feeder for the birds that favor insects.Choose high quality seed, suet and treats. Black Oil Sunflower is the top choice seed and readily eaten by the widest variety of birds, and it is the favorite food of many. Avoid seed blends with milo, wheat, oats and rice-these are inexpensive fillers that few birds actually eat.Water! Essential for bathing and drinking, water is key in any backyard bird habitat. Add a bird bath or other water feature. Birds are drawn to the sound of moving water, and a fresh, unfrozen water source can be critical during deep freezes when it can be scarce.Plant native fruit bearing trees and shrubs. These provide a natural food source and shelter!

    It Works!! Sort of!!!
Very happy with this large seed hoop under my bird feeder! It’s saving my patio and lawn. We were starting to get rodents for obvious reasons. The seed hoop is VERY good to EXCELLENT QUALITY and does the job of collecting extra seeds (much more than I realized!) The price is absolutely right too. I’m going to buy one more to replace my older seed hoop that is of inferior quality. I LOVE this Songbird Seed Hoop. It solved A LOT of problems. Highly recommend!!P.S. So far NO problems with the numerous squirrels in the yard trying to get into seed hoop. A few feet away from the bird feeder / seed hoop, is a squirrel house attached to the tree (bought on Amazon) and squirrels seem happy with this arrangement lol. Also I have a squirrel-prevention dome hanging over the bird feeder and have placed the bird feeder / seed hoop out of their strategic reach. (i’ll report back if problems…!)Update 5 days later: Squirrels jumped from their house (located on tree trunk) to bird feeder, landing in seed hoop… I have repositioned the bird feeder, even trimmed some nearby branches in hopes of keeping squirrels out of seed feeder. If that doesn’t work, I will relocate bird feeder under eaves of house…And i thought i solved the problem! Still love seed hoop but it’s a bit of a double edge sword!

    Works great!
I bought this to keep the birds off the ground away from a cat that keeps trying to sneak into my yard. It’s working so well! Only a couple things I’ll note. One, the lines that hold it work well, I like that they’re easily adjustable but as it gets heavy from birds sitting on it, I have some bigger blue Jays and Doves, or if it gets lopsided from to much seed it can slip down and dump some of the seed. I now go out and level the seed out on the mesh or dump more often as it gets wet in our PNW rain. We plan to swap the string for wire to keep it sturdier. May not be an issue for everyone. As long as I tend to it once a week it doesn’t get lopsided and it is catching almost all of the seed. Very easy to remove and clean. My birds are loving it and my ground feeders are using it which makes me feel happy they’re safer. Definitely recommend this product.

    Lightweight but effective
The seed catcher is very lightweight. Without added weight it will blow around and drop the seeds. I ended up adding 2 sheets of hardware cloth to make it more sturdy in addition to adding a rock in the middle to make it more stable. I love the concept but it could have been designed to be a little more robust. With my modifications, I absolutely love it. I don’t have to worry about attracting rodents. It catches about 98% of the seeds. The only seed that actually falls now are from the birds themselves as they are flying or if they drop them off the seed catcher. The seed catcher also acts as another feeder and you have less wasted seed. I would definitely recommend getting a catcher that is much wider than your feeder to help catch the falling seeds.

    Perfect fit to feeder
So far works great. The large adjustable net keeps bird seed from dropping to the ground.

    Naughty Wren, Foiled Again
This catcher paid for itself in under 48 hours.I have a pair of naughty Carolina Wrens that keep digging through the safflower seeds I put out and flicking them out of the tray. So, I bought this catcher to see if I could reduce my seed loss. In less than 48 hours, the wrens have almost emptied the hopper again. In the provided picture, it is morning. By the afternoon of the same day the hopper was down by 75%. (Yes, I keep the feeder cleaned, so I can’t fathom what they’re digging for.)Now, instead of ground loss, I can recapture seeds and re-use them. That will save me quite a bit of money. And the other birds didn’t hesitate to get into the catcher for some feeding too. They just treat it like another of my platform feeders. So the wrens are foiled again and I still get to enjoy their chirps and songs. The item comes in a small green pouch, with a second pouch holding the hooks and cords. So some assembly is required, but not much. Once it’s removed from the pouch, you open it up just like a pop-open car windshield sunscreen. The adjustment strings are long, so I was able to get it just where I wanted it underneath the feeder. The excess was pretty easy to coil around and tie down to keep under control as well.I’m a little worried about how it will perform in windstorms though. The hooks, while good quality, might not be able to hold on. I may need to find an alternative way to attach it. For the time being, I’ve added some rocks like the instructions recommended.Overall, I’ve been very satisfied. My only regret is that I didn’t buy it sooner.

Rain doesn’t collect like another one I have!
I had a hard time attaching so that it would not move on a windy day, as being at top of a hill, I get a lot of windy days! But I figured it out with also using ties and a couple more Shepard hooks! It works great but I now have been told to use less millet seed more peanuts & shelled sunflower seeds! Much less in the net and on the ground! I get so many beautiful birds!

    It’s not a perfect world
I love the idea, but from a practical standpoint, there are some drawbacks you ought to consider before buying.First, it’s not beautiful. That’s subjective of course, but especially when covered with seeds, hulls, feathers, and poop, it’s not so attractive to look at. It sways a lot in the wind, resulting in the seeds it has caught been dumped or blown out.Finding a way to attach the six cords with hooks to my feeder was a problem. I’ve managed to rig it, but it’s awkward and will make it more difficult to remove the feeder for refilling. It provides a very attractive landing pad for squirrels, which would otherwise have a hard time leaping down onto my feeder and holding on. Whether it holds their weight or not, it will be problematic.I like not losing so much seed to the ground, and attracting rodents. In my case, the “no waste” seed does not get picked up by ground feeders for some reason.I’ll keep it up for now and see how it holds up. If and when it breaks, I won’t get another one.

Best seed catcher I have every purchased. Expensive, but worth it because it will last for years. Very well-made and sturdier, so it stays in place and doesn’t tip over with a bird sitting on it like my other ones did.

Fabulous! These have saved our lawn! No more heaps of mouldering sunflower seeds! We have tonnes of goldfinches which throw half eaten seeds everywhere… these seed hoops have stopped that! Much better than all our home made attempts You need to angle the feeder pole a bit if hanging 2 next to each other so they fit. They aren’t exactly sturdy as made of lightweight net, but they have a rigid outer ring. They’ve blown around and not been wrecked! Husband tied garden wire to the bottom of the feeder. We hang the seed hoop from there. If you brush them out daily they are easy to clean, don’t let sunflower sends build up and start to ferment though! All in all, expensive but excellent.

I bought this to stop the birds dropping sunflower seeds on plants and grass below my bird feeder. This is because sunflowers are allelopathic – they exude toxins that stop nearby plants from growing and actually kills some. The grass under the feeder was especially affected. It’s not very attractive to look at, but it does the job and catches a large proportion of the seeds the birds drop. It’s easy to clean out, much easier than trying to clean up the seeds on the lawn.Given the materials involved it does seem quite expensive, but it does do the job

Keeps the seeds/shells off our lawn. Had it over a year now and it’s been outside the whole time. It’s holding up really well. Just took a bit of time to figure out how to attach it to my feeder so it doesn’t blow around. We get a lot of wind in our area.

Living in the country and surrounded by fields I am aware of the ever present rat population.. but still wanted to feed the birds…especially during the winter months . However ,being such messy feeders, I found the seed and nut pieces they dropped onto the floor attracted rats and mice . I thought a large hoop catcher just might solve the problem …and since installation I have seen very little evidence of rodent visits . I was able to suspend a nut feeder with a hanging seed tray below and above the large hoop..so now have one major feeding station The hoop catches any food flung over the edges of both feeders and I find the larger birds then pick that from the hoop itself . It is very easy to unhook as I do bring all feeders in at dusk .. but it being very light and easy to attach makes this little hardship ….so both aspects achieved….no vermin and birds fed. A little pricey for what it is but well worth the money for the excellent result .
