Good start for my feral cat shelter
Update #3: With fall around the corner, I just made good on my previous comment that I would buy another one. The previously mentioned returned feral cat has stayed through the summer and I wanted him to get acclimated to both shelters before they are really needed. This time I used a jar of sample exterior paint and it went on super smooth and was ready with just a single coat. I think they may have updated to longer screws so that was a pleasant surprise for the new shelter. Last seasonâs shelter still is holding up quite well through the record heat, humidity, and storms of the summer.Update #2: I feel we have almost concluded the first winter season with this shelter so – time for an assessment. It looks as good as the day I set it outside. Weâve had some rough spring storms as well. When we had a rough cold snap ( -15 F), the kitty went elsewhere for those two daysâ¦but he reoccupied the house once it hit about 10 degrees. I also bought a thermometer so I could monitor the internal temp from inside the house. With him in it, meaning the hot pad was activated, it was usually about 20-30 degrees warmer than the porch temp. The variation was likely due to whether wind was whipping cold air in there or if it was a less windy day, and also if the sunlight hit it. Once the night temps stay above 40 degrees, I will unplug the hot pad – the cats still like shelters when it is stormy/rainy. All in all, I am still delighted with this purchase and will likely purchase a second one later this yearâ¦this shelter recently enticed back another feral that we thought was long gone.Update! Iâve had it outside for four days. The first night wasnât very cold and I left the flap on. Feral kitty didnât go in (I have cameras). The next day I unscrewed the two fasteners for the flap and pulled it off (no need to cut, in case you want to reinstall them later). The night I removed them – cranky cat moved in. He just didnât like the flaps. He sleeps in there all night and most of the day, and when he exits I can feel that it is toasty in the house. Definitely recommend.Original review: Over the past four winters (other seasons as well, of course), I have looked after neighborhood cats – feral and stray. I have made two shelters out of large plastic storage containers and all the kitties have made it through the winter (quite cold Midwest winters) just fine. We socialized two of three cats and once they truly adopted us, they are fully inside cats. This year I wanted to upgrade to a wood shelter for our resident cranky feral guy who, despite my best efforts, has not been won over to become an inside kitty. This seemed like a good, affordable choice, and it is. I did not have any of the problems that others have reported with unaligned screw holes. I agree with other reviews that the screws are a little too short. Another quarter of an inch would be perfect. That said, I was able to get it to work. Here are few things that I did to upgrade this good option to a great option (photos included): I used caulk around the seams of the four wall panels to make it more airtight. I also bought roll foam reflective insulation, cut to fit, and used gorilla adhesive to adhere it to the wood panels on each side. I also use outdoor heat pads, so I cut a small hole in the corner of the floorboard to allow for the plug. Oh, also, since I got the unfinished wood version, I went to the local hardware store and got a 8 ounce sample size of semi transparent exterior stain which was more than enough for the four exterior panels.I am still keeping one of two plastic shelters in case Mr. Cranky doesnât like this. It generally takes him a couple weeks to warm up to new things. If he doesnât like it, I have no doubt that another cat will pass through and claim it.

Cat loves it!
Cute little house for our outdoor stray cat. Easy assembly with 2 people. The roofing material seems durable, but not sure how weather-resistant the rest of the wood is; if it will survive more than 1 winter. We’ll see! Our cat enjoys using it, so we’re pleased with it. The bed / warming mat inside is an added bonus! Thank you!
Temptation cat treat box was shattered . Treats sll over in large shipping box, which also contained a bag of Iams dog food, which is ok –

Our feral lady cat loves it!
Our house was adopted by a lovely little kitty who has no interest in being handled by us or joining our two housecats inside. Trust me, we tried so hard. So we put this house outside the sliding glass door and she LOVES it! This is her sanctuary. She gets fed twice a day on the roof, doesn’t have to tolerate the needs of the humans, and leaves us dead mice all few times a week as a thank you.

Put the bottom in before you secure the bqck
I think this shelter may last a couple years. Itâs made of very thin wood. You wonât be able to fit the bottom in unless you leave the back off to get it in place. Then secure the back. There is a small gap in the back for ventilation. The roof may leak in the back since it doesnât overhang on that side. Itâs a good size but cheaply made. There is a sort of roofing type of application to the top but then there is wood trim that wasnât covered. I put mine under a tree as I donât trust that itâs too weatherproof.I lined up the hinge where it was supposed to go and the lid wouldnât close. There are little circles on the inside so you know where to place it. I removed it and used two eye screws and some ribbon. It doesnât look like it will provide any warmth. Itâs only a wind barrier. I got some of the reflective adhesive sheet like I used on the side of my fridge next to the stove and lined the inside. Be careful not to block that ventilation hole. We will see if anyone takes us residence. For anyone that thinks it smells, it smells like a Christmas tree. Itâs fir wood. It doesnât smell chemically.I chose this over using a plastic tub with straw and another plastic tub because it looks better in the yard. I got the red one because we have a red shed. If I had more money, Iâd have gone for an insulated house.
