Product description

Spagmoss Production
Deep on the West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island, water flows from the Southern Alps feeding the natural habitat of Sphagnum moss. From this pristine environment we harvest Sphagnum cristatum and Sphagnum subnitens to produce Spagmoss.
The labour intensive process begins when the moss is hand picked from swamps which are dedicated to the farming of Sphagnum moss. After being extracted from the swamp by helicopter it is transported to Coastpak where the second phase of the processing begins
Besgrow provides a range of Spagmoss products to suit many customers in the orchid growing, floristry and landscaping industries
New Zealand Sphagnum moss is a versatile product renowned for its remarkable natural properties; it is long lasting with an excellent water holding capacity.
Spagmoss is commonly used:
By commercial and hobby growers in the cultivation of various orchid species As a decorative enhancement For assisting with young plant growth By carnivorous plant growers For reptile bedding As an additive to increase water holding in other substrates

To ensure Besgrow provide you with only the highest quality Spagmoss products we have long-established quality control procedures in place. Throughout production Sphagnum moss is monitored to ensure the product meets our quality standards.

Best moss for orchids
This review is specifically in the context of growing orchids. It is the only moss I will use for my orchids now, after trying many brands over the years. It is very, very good quality, clean, minimal debris, long, wide strands of quality moss. Excellent water retention because of how full and thick the strands are. I have never yet received a bad batch.Instructions for preparing for storage:It is not ideal to take strands directly from the dry block for use, as they will break and tear and make a mess. The best way to prepare this moss is to hydrate the entire block once you receive it in a sink of water. This will take about 30 minutes. Once the block is completely separated, drain the water and gently squeeze all the water from the moss. lay the moss out on a flat surface to completely dry. I put it out in the sun and it took about eight hours to completely dry. Then you can put it away and it will be ready to use whenever you need it.

My go-to sphagnum moss
Love this stuff, doesn’t stink, very nice quality, my plants love it.With one bag I’ve filled three ~2′ moss poles (2 round, 1 D-shaped), a few propagations, and still have a bit left over. The amount in this package goes a long way. Great value and product.

Long, fluffy, amazing quality
This product is top notch!I needed some high quality sphagnum moss to use as a substrate component for my orchids. I keep phalaenopsis, oncidium, paphiopedilum, and many more exotic kinds. Some of them needed repotting this spring. I have epiphytes and terrestrial orchids. Every orchid I have is in a unique mix that is optimized to give each plant the correct amount of air, moisture, and nutrients. Some of my orchids are grown semi-hydro style, potted in solely LECA (in gravel form, Turface). But not all of them do well in that medium, which is where this sphagnum moss comes in.I use: bark, moss, lava rock, coconut chips, charcoal, turface, sometimes perlite, all in different combinations.Sphagnum moss is a major component of my mixes. It provides excellent water retention, aeration when packed loosely, and some antimicrobial properties. This specific moss is very high quality. If you check out the Spagmoss website they explain how the moss is sourced, and it shows in the quality of the product. They hand pick it from cultivated moss fields in New Zealand and bring it to processing centers via helicopter where it is cleaned and air dried carefully. The strands are intact, they are very long and fluffy. The brick form it comes in expands immensely upon soaking with water. I only needed a big handful of it dry, to pot up 5 different orchids (mixed with other substrate amendments). To easily pot up an orchid, I would recommend soaking the moss in a small bucket and then squeezing it gently to remove most of the water so it is damp. Working on a tray is best so you can mix your substrate up and not make a big mess. Wearing some gloves helps. Mix some pieces of moss in with your other amendments and carefully fill in space in and around the root ball.If you need a long lasting high quality sphagnum moss for orchid potting or any other purpose look no further. This stuff is amazing!

Very nice moss but slightly expensive
I really like this moss, despite having to pick out alittle bit of debris(shown in photo). It holds the mosture very well and provides what my plants need. This 12L pack makes an approximately 49×5 moss pole with a 5 inch space on the bottom for soil or bark. So I actually have 44×5 of the pole filled with moss. I would buy this moss again but wish it was ess expensive.

The only sphagnum moss brand I will buy
I have only used this brand due to positive reviews and recommendations from other people who use it for carnivorous plants and orchids and my own personal experience. I made the mistake of ordering a different brand only because it was $4 less expensive and arrived a few days earlier and that moss literally started to grow mold on it, which I personally have never seen happen before, thus ordering this brand again and re-transplanting a Nepenthes. Luckily, I hadn’t transplanted my remaining plants. This is high quality sphagnum moss all around with very little of the hard little pieces in it. I have never had problems with this brand and have recommended it to other people as well. This is 100 percent highly recommended in my opinion and I will never make the mistake of switching brands again to save a few dollars as that was a total loss and I promptly threw what was left away and re-ordered Besgrow. Lesson learned. A well deserved 5 stars for consistent high quality.
