    Excellent resource
I purchased this book while I was in vet school and continue to use it as a reference. It is filled with helpful tricks and techniques to accomplish a full and thorough physical exam while having it be low stress on the patient! An excellent resource I will treasure to have on my desk during practice!

Incredibly helpful even if you aren’t going to veterinary or vet tech school or work in a vet’s office
Even if you aren’t a vet tech or in vet school, this is an incredibly helpful book to have in your home library if you have dogs and/or cats in your home. This manual covers the basics of how to examine a small animal (limited to cats and dogs, no other small animal like ferrets or hamsters or guinea pigs) to determine the state of their health. It details what a healthy animal will present, and what symptoms or signs to look for if something is wrong. This textbook doesn’t cover how to treat a specific problem, so if you are looking for a self-care manual for your pets, this is not the book. It will also not help you specifically diagnose a problem you pet may be having. While it does cover a multitude of possible reasons why your pet might have itchy skin or be scooting their butts across the carpet, you will need to go to a vet for diagnosis and treatment. This book will only help you identify what is normal versus abnormal so you can make a vet appointment. It’s always important to make sure you cat or dog is in the best of health, and this will help you identify possible health problems. The best part of this book is the sheer number of images both for healthy and abnormal so you can compare what you see on your cat or dog. Everything from nose health to anal glands is covered. If you don’t feel comfortable doing health checks on your pet, this will at least help you understand what you vet is telling you about your pet’s health.

    Seems a little too emotional
I haven’t really read the book in depth. I only got so far as an introductory passage on caring for cats and I didn’t care for it. I have had cats my whole life and I have had veterinary experience dealing with cats. It seemed to make out cats as these fragile creatures who are very timid and shy. While this is sometimes the case with cats, in a veterinary setting vet techs and the veterinarian must do whatever is necessary to help an animal, even if that means making the animal uncomfortable or angry. When it comes down to it the information in the book only applies in an ideal, perfect setting. I feel prospective vet students would have a rude awakening if reading this first they are surprised with the gruffness they must use when dealing with animals.

Such an amazing resource of knowledge!
We have a copy of this at home. Right now my girlfriend is reading through it. Soo much information all in one book! There are lots of things in here that the average pet owner can learn and use as they observe their pets on a daily basis. More knowledge of what to look for could possibly help save your pets life. As a whole, this would be the perfect reference for vet students to study up on. I have had my fair share of veterinarians who are friends and students in my life. They would love this.

    Amazing Resource
This textbook is worth its weight in gold. It is written to target it’s audience, Veterinary Students, and provide them with everything they need to learn how to perform a proper physical exam. It keeps in mind the latest welfare concerns, and emphasizes fear free handling especially for cats. This is a book every Veterinary Student should have on their shelves.

Clear, detailed guide to clinical examination
This is a clear, detailed guide to clinical examination, with a large number of useful photographs. The fact that every significant medical point is properly referenced means that it’s possible to check everything out at the source . It would have been more helpful if the references had been collected at the end (instead, they are at the end of every chapter, so one has to flick through the pages to get to the end of the current chapter). Cats and dogs are considered separately, which makes sense, although unfortunately, there is much more about dogs than about cats. The only reason why I am giving this four stars rather than five is because the author refers to her patients as “it”s throughout the text, as if they were inanimate objects rather than sentient beings. I can only imagine that this was an attempt to appear more ‘scientific’ – although quite how this could actually be scientific isn’t clear.

    Excellent veterinary resource
So far the best source I know to learn to do a good physical examination in dogs and cats. Photos are of an excellent quality, demonstrating what is described in the text, not just limited to presenting the method to do the physical examination. Perfect to get acquainted with many of the findings on physical examination that quite often I am unknown.

This is not against the book’s contents, but the print quality is horrible. For example, I have posted an example of another Wiley book for comparison. The pages feel like they were printed from a home printer. The book’s heart is the images that lose the detail/resolution because of the paper & print quality.
