PENN-PLAX presents the Clear-Free Premium Under Gravel Aquarium Filter.
Those who’ve been around the aquatic block for a while
know that Under Gravel Filters (UGFs) are a testament of time.
This Filter is air driven and utilizes an Air Pump (not included) to cycle crystal clear water throughout your aquarium,
while keeping a crisp and neat look inside.
This means there’s less “moving parts,” making for simplistic and easy maintenance.
It’s suitable for most 15 – 20 (high) gallon aquariums, and is safe for Freshwater and Saltwater setups.Biological, Chemical, and Physical Filtration:
As air is pushed through the Air Stones and rises through the Lift Tubes,
water is gently suctioned through gravel and the filter plates,
allowing both air and water to pass through the Filt-a-Carb Activated Carbon Cartridges.
When water continues to be drawn through, anaerobic bacteria collects and colonizes within the gravel and filter plates.
Also Aerates Your Tank:
Since the Clear-Free Premium Under Gravel Filter is air driven
through the use of Air Stones and an Air Pump (not included), it also aerates your tank.
In essence, your aquarium is being filtered and aerated at the same time, though the same system!
It’s a filter and bubbler in 1!
Items Included:
The Clear-Free Premium Under Gravel Filter includes
2 Filter Plates
2 Adjustable Lift Tubes
2 Straight Airline Tubes
3 Filter Plate Connecters
2 Replaceable Filt-a-Carb Activated Carbon Media Cartridges
Measurements:
Each Filter Plate Separately = 11.25” (W) x 11.2” (D)
Filter Plates Together = 22.5” (W) x 11.2” (D)

Customers say
Customers find the undergravel filter works well, particularly with power heads, and appreciate its effectiveness as a biological filter. The product is easy to assemble and set up, offers good value for money, and keeps tanks clean, with one customer noting it completely cleared muck and sediment. While some customers say it fits their tanks well, others report it being too big. The sturdiness receives mixed reviews, with several customers reporting that the plastic breaks easily.

Best filter for the money
An under gravel is simply one of the best filters you can buy, dollar for dollar. This is because they are highly effective, simple, inexpensive, and last a long time. Here are some tips for how to use this filter correctly.1. DO NOT OVER CLEAN YOUR GRAVEL. This is the most important thing. You should not clean your gravel much at all. Yes some brown stuff will accumulate. This brown stuff is not “fish poop”. It is beneficial bacteria. If you remove this beneficial bacteria your filter will stop working and your fish may die. DO NOT OVER CLEAN YOUR GRAVEL. If you must clean your gravel, only clean 1/2 the tank at a time and give the cleaned side some time to regrow its bacteria before cleaning the other side. Otherwise only very lightly clean the top 1/2 inch of gravel.2. You do not really need the carbon cartridges. If you want to support Penn-Plax, I guess you could keep buying them.3. Use 1-3 inches of 1/8 inch aquarium gravel on top of the filter. Under gravel filters are so effective because they provide a lot of surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow on. The more gravel you have the more effective this filter will be.4. Decide whether you want to use a power head or an air pump to move water through the filter. Power heads will greatly increase the effectiveness of the filter and provide cleaner water. If you plan on having a lot of fish in your tank, you should use power heads. The power heads should be rated at a gallons per hour that is 2-3x the gallons of the tank. If you use air pumps, they should be rated for the size of your aquarium.5. Decide whether you want to join the under gravel plates or not. If you are using air pumps I would not join the plates. Simply put an air stone in each uplift tube for each plate. You do not need to buy multiple air pumps. Just buy a simple ‘T’ joint to split the output from the pump. If you are using power heads, I would join every two plates and use one power head per two plates. Some people are complaining that this filter killed their fish which is very unfortunate. The filter did not kill their fish. Incorrect use of the filter killed their fish. They probably cleaned out all the gravel and removed all the beneficial bacteria which caused the filter to stop working. Unless the filter has become so clogged that the water is no longer flowing through it, there is no need to clean the gravel or underneath the filter. If this does happen, I would suggest that the person is greatly overfeeding their fish! Some people are complaining that this filter “produces high nitrate.” Producing nitrate is the point of all filters and shows that a filter is functioning properly! If your nitrate levels are too high for you to manage, you are putting too much food in the tank. A different filter is not going to fix this. There are only two ways to remove nitrate from an aquarium: change the water or grow plants. Really the plants are just incorporating the nitrate into their bodies, so you will have to remove some plants eventually too if you want to actually remove the nitrate. There is a reason many successful hobbyist have used under gravel filters for decades and I am very glad that Penn-Plax makes this product!

Good budget Undergravel filter – some things to know.
Penn Plax UGFs (undergravel filters) are a good budget friendly option. Some things to be aware of if you are considering this type of filter for the first time:1. Gravel size. You want about 1/4 – 3/8 inch gravel. Not large/jumbo 1/2 inch rocks / marbles. The gravel becomes the filter, so it needs lots of surface area. Your regular aquarium gravel from Wally World or Topfin aquarium gravel will do fine. You can get the cheapest of the right size you can find. Rinse it well in a colander or old pillowcase before using. It will take time to cycle. I use this: https://a.co/d/fUsehAl rather than Seachem Prime (possibly the most popular de-chorinator on youtube).2. Airstones – the ones that come with this are fine to start, but I wouldn’t buy them. Same with the competition’s. I want airstones that are reusable, less than 1/2 inch wide, and have no back pressure on them (you can blow through the tube at the top and feel the air). I have found two that do this. Ziss airstones (google them) or these on amazon: https://a.co/d/bhGkeRV – these last a long time between cleanings and can be cleaned by soaking in a mix of baking soda/water overnight (or longer if needed).4. Air pump – for a 10 gallon, you want a light air pump. Stronger pumps are for deeper tanks, or multiple tanks. The Tetra: https://a.co/d/4mFhvzi is fine for a 10 gallon (with the right air stones) and is budget friendly. For just starting, get something like this kit: https://a.co/d/6zVe2JX so you can send air to both air stones. 3 outlets (as shown) are nice in case you want to ‘bleed’ extra air out of the unused one to reduce flow, or hookup a box/sponge filter or another air stone later. These also provide ‘flow control’ so you can adjust the air flow that way. Kit also has 2 check valves, though you will only need 1.5. Get decent tubing. Clear Python brand is fine https://a.co/d/86H9Cuc .Finally – my biggest con of Penn Plax UGFs – is with the company. No where can I find replacement or spare parts. This is a relatively minor issue due to the low cost, but if you break the gravel guards (the part that connects the tube to the ‘filter’ that sits on the bottom of the tank) when setting this up, you have to buy a whole new filter just to get that part. Lee’s (while more expensive) does sell replacement parts.Have fun!

The Only Biological Filter You’ll Ever Need
This is the only biological filter you will ever need. This simple piece of equipment creates a space of water under your substrate, allowing the flow of water down into it, and back up out of the lift tube. This allows your substrate to be your one and only biological filter, growing colossal amounts of beneficial bacteria, unrivaled by all but the most optimized (aka 20-30 ppi foam filled canisters) power filters out there. Only a big sump filled with K1 fluidized media (has to be fluidized) is proven to really beat it. On top of this, those can get expensive and this product is dirt cheap and super simple. It will also never leak.Using the filter the way itâs designed will guarantee you will never, ever have to gravel vac or take this filter down to “clean” it in any way.By the way, the brown mulm and gunk in ALL filters is BENEFICIAL and is what is not only keeping your fish alive, but is keeping the water clear and your tank healthy. Minimally clean your filters just enough to restore flow if it gets slowed down too much.Using this filter the way it was originally designed to be used will result in a zero maintenance filter that will give you beautiful water. People have run these for decades without a need for cleaning.I really appreciate this company for still making this and other old school aquarium equipment.

Simple to assemble just cut out a few jointsPuts air into the water – fish need the oxygen to liveJust using it to keep the little ones alive – had loads and loads of eggs laid in my Aquaponics but were slowly getting eaten by the bigger fishPut the weed containing the eggs into a medium container – revamped it using the filter and as you can see from the video I now have over 30 more fishI have ordered another set as Iâm expanding my tanks againVery good product
