PENN-PLAX presents the 1.4 Gallon Aqua-Ponic Fish Tank and Planter.
Each fish tank is made from ultra-clear plastic,
and replicates nature’s metabolic cycle by providing a healthy and symbiotic environment
for fish and plants: as fish excrete waste in the tank, the plant atop absorbs
this waste as nourishment, which in turn cleans the tank’s water.
For those more interested in growing plants hydroponically,
our tanks can also be used strictly as a planter, allowing you to add your own nutrients.Suggested Fish:
While Bettas are the most popular fish for our 1.4 Gallon Aqua-Ponic Tank,
they can also house Bloodfin Tetras, White Cloud Minnows, Danios, and Guppies (1 – 3 fish).
For Bettas, please decrease the water level an inch,
giving them enough space to breath from the water’s surface.
Suggested Plants:
Most indoor house plants and kitchen herbs are suitable for planting atop.
This includes Peace Lily, Chinese Evergreen, Lucky Bamboo, English Ivy, Mint, Watercress, Chives, or any leafy Lettuce.
We recommend using established plants instead of starting from seed.
Please research desired plant’s toxicity and nutritional requirements before using,
since fish may nibble on the roots.
Please note that the plant is not a source of food for fish.
Any fish food can be used but avoid overfeeding as this can cloud water, and harm both fish and the plant.
Additional Features:
Our Aqua-Ponic Tanks come with ceramic planting media,
which retains water and supports root growth for any plant you chose.
Place larger pieces on the bottom of the enclosed pot, ensuring
that small pieces won’t accidently fall into the aquarium.
To add water into the tank, simply water the plant, as if it’s in a pot of soil.

Plastic Tank
Lid with Enclosed Pot

Great little desk aquaponics unit.
I bought 4 of these for my room. Couldn’t decide which fish I wanted so I got all of them. The tank is a nice little size, perfect for a single betta. I put a mini heater and I’ll be getting a mini aerator to complete it. Fish seems happy, and my cat keeps him company.Pros: Great size for desk. Easy to put together. Easy to maintain. Sturdy. Could easily be used to grow small fruit/veg hydroponically.Of the 4 I bought, one came with defects on the base (seems to have been an imperfect mold pour) I saw in other reviews this may be a common problem. The material isn’t as clear as some of the other acrylics, but for the price point still a good value. Also not enough clay stones for the top. I do hydroponics, so thankfully I had extra.

Good tank, happy fish!
I’m amazed by all the bad reviews on this tank! I’ve had it for almost a year and I love it and was looking into buying a second one. It seems the majority of reviewers are saying that it is too small, but come on people!!! These fish live in cold, sad, dirty little plastic containers at pet stores and supermarkets. Even the half gallon tank is the upgrade of all upgrades for these little betas. When I got mine he wasn’t even able to swim around because the container was so small. But now he gets to swim and has many hiding spots in there. This is NOT unethical! Some reviews are totally laughable saying that their fish died in a day? Honey that wasn’t because of the tank size, how could anyone even think that? Research your fish- there are many factors that I didn’t even consider at first. Betas need a heater because they’re tropical and read about the nitrogen cycle! It’s very important to have certain bacteria set up in there BEFORE you put your fish in the tank. Also since the tank is small you will need to change the water at least every 1-2 weeks, otherwise your fish will be vulnerable to parasites and diseases. And as for the whole “the fish won’t be able to breath” thing- the plant will help filter and circulate air!! I think it even says that in the description. I also have some marimo moss balls in my tank to help with that as well. All in all great fish tank.

Use the Pet Select store!
First off, I purchased this 1.4 gallon Aquaponics Tank through Pet Select; they have amazing customer service and i highly recommend that if you see them as a seller, to purchase through them. I would give them 5 stars but I did receive a faulty tank that ended up getting a crack up the side and along the bottom that I couldnât seal with aquarium sealant. After messaging the company through amazon, they quickly responded that they would send out a replacement. Sadly, the replacement that was sent was their .5 gallon tank, not the 1.5 gallon. I quickly sent them a photo of the mistake and they replied back within an hour that they would send another replacement but the one I had originally purchased was out of stock at the moment. They offered a full refund and said to keep the .5 gallon one. I will definitely be keeping my eye out for when the 1.5 gallon is back in stock. The tank itself seemed great, it was perfect for my betta, Tommy. It was easy to wipe down, and my plant was doing great. I have no clue how the crack happened but before that I wouldâve definitely recommended this tank to anyone that wants something small but not too small for bettas, and wanted something pretty for a counter or desk.

Pretty aquaponic setup
I needed an extra small tank to raise scuds and snails as food for my puffer fish. I planted a peace lily in the top, filled with a layer of rocks in bottom, and added a sponge filter. I also grow hornwort in the water column which I think is pretty and helps keep nitrates down. This is too small for fish but has served me well for scuds and snails (which are surprisingly entertaining). Please get a larger tank for bettas, at least 5 gallons.

Great combination
Love this setup for my classroom fish! I feel like the plant helps keep the water clearer, but it does require more frequent water refills. The fish seems to enjoy swimming and hanging out in the roots and the students love to watch the fish!

Betta Oasis
This is pretty neat. I purchased for aesthetic reasons, it looks so peaceful. After reading all of the reviews I did add the following: light, filter and heater. They do sell small starter plants at your local pet stores for the top, I only learned this after I bought a peace Lilly at Home Depot. To be helpful, Iâve added photo of all of my additions (all found on Amazon). I attached the âcorn hole lightâ with clear command strips. I like that the top is covered by the plant to restrict dust and you can easily feed the fish using the openings on the side. Itâs a simple set up and hopefully low maintenance, Iâve only had it for 2 weeks now but so far so good. Iâm enjoying it and my Betta seems happy. I recommend.

Betta stuck in plant pod
My sweet little betta got her nose stuck in the plant pod. I donât know how long she was hanging there. As soon as I saw it I took the lid off and gently pulled her out. Sheâs swimming now but it probably hurt her.

This kit is wonderful. I have the larger tank. It needs a plant and some fish, along with a weekly water change and some fish food. As a pet-keeping set-up it is delightfully simple.I do have a warning however: the plant must have its roots in the tank water, and preparing the plant for that job is fiddley because there is a narrow grid to pull the roots through. It is also easy while you are changing the water to lift the plant roots out of the grid by mistake and damage its roots.I think the plant holder needs re-designing. There should be a way to fix the plant in place.

Beautiful aquarium. My betta has been living in it for 4 months already. I do a 100% water change every week/2 week. Be careful to keep the tank in a warm room away from windows. There is not way the water is gonna be hot enough near a window. Bettas are tropical fish that require water of at least 70-75Feed the fish as the betta won’t eat the plant roots. The roots of the house plant grew so much. Be careful to remove all the dirt from the houseplant before plating it. i did not do it and i end up with dirt at the bottom of the tank

Really great option for aquaponics with a betta fish. With my setup, I decided to propogate Thai basil, which is a cool way to grow a plant if you don’t want to buy one raised in a pot.The actual tank is quite aesthetically pleasing as compared with other options out there and just fits a fish of this size. Don’t go for the smaller option, it’s simply too tiny!I also wouldn’t keep anything other than a betta in these conditions too because they’re one of the only types with a labyrinth organ. The plant needed a bit of light so I added a moss covered coconut shell for my fish to hide in. (And before I get any critiques, I live in the tropics so my setup does not require a heater!)Only thing I’d note is it was affordable when I bought it but the price seems to have increased a lot since.
