I’ve been using this for a year now, in Oregon where we get a lot of rain and mud. I think it does a great job. First I soak the rug in one of those muck buckets overnight to loosen all the dirt and mud off, then I drain it, put it in the washing machine, add 5oz of Rug Wash and do a load meant for towels with 2 rinses so they get another good soak and all the soap rinsed off. I have a POS washing machine so I don’t care if I kill it with horse hair, but you may feel differently about yours. Out of the washer, I hang it on a line to dry. Once it’s dry I test it’s waterproofing by dribbling some water on it and seeing if it runs off. If it does, I’m good. If not, it needs to be treated with the Rug Proof. So far only the rugs I previously washed with laundry detergent needed to be treated with Rug Proof, so if you start out using this stuff, you’ll probably get a few washing without needing any extra steps. On a side note, I use a clean muck bucket when I do the Rug Proof as well. Load the clean dry blanket in the muck bucket, pour in 5 gallons water, pour in 17oz of the Rug Proof and then use a clean toilet plunger to mix it around. You don’t want it on your hands, it’s irritating stuff. Let it sit for 2 hours to overnight, then lift the blanket out, squeezing out the liquid as you go. Put the blanket in the washing machine on quick wash with NO soap and let it get rinsed out. (most new washers rinse and drain cycle don’t get all the Rug Proof out sufficiently) Hang to dry. Now you have a muck bucket with great waterproofing left over, go ahead and waterproof all that old ski gear, tents, mittens, gloves, rain coats…. almost any material you want water proofed and breathable.Updated part: I’m still using it. I think it still works really well on fairly new blankets or ones that the waterproof membrane hasn’t been compromised or gotten old. Once that happens, it’s probably not going to work but then I don’t think much of anything will.

This blanket wash is gentle to the waterproofing on my horse’s blankets.
I have used this brand of rug wash for many years and it is the best. The blankets come out clean and fresh. The waterproofing is not damaged by this product.

Great wash for horse blankets
I’ve been using this product for several years and love it. Cleans well. No residue left behind. No chemical odor. Never had a problem with skin reaction from my thoroughbred. I always followed up with Nikwax TX Direct Spray on waterproofing for added protection to the outside shell and let air dry. My blankets are ready for their sixth winter looking nearly new!

Winner for horse blankets
I bought this to wash horse blankets and am extremely surprised at how well it works. Iâve used other âhorseâ branded detergents in the past and this is by far the best. I went to a laundromat and used their commercial machines, no need for an extra rinse or spin cycle. Just 5oz of the wash and I washed on warm water heavy soil level. Very impressed and the blankets came out smelling great with no stains!

This stuff is pretty good. I do prep my horse sheets with spray-on Resolve for the nasty stuff and I also use a roller to take up the hair so I don’t compromise my washer (front load). I use a blanket system that I buy through Schneider’s Tack. You can get an underlay with padding geared to your areas needs and then put a sheet on top with the slots aligned with both. Anyway have been using that for years and this wash also for years. The top sheet meant to shed water comes out good from this wash. There is a complimentary wash available from Nikwax that will reclaim the waterproofing nature of the blanket/sheet. I have that but you need a lot of product for each item which becomes pricey. Even though I live in the PNW, my horse has shelter from the rain and frankly he hates rain, so waterproofing has not been top of my list. Another thing about this blanket system I use, since I wash the sheet and the liner separately it fits very well in my washer so I never need to take it to a commercial laundromat or use the costly washing services out there for horse blankets. The only thing to remember is to prep the sheet/blanket before the wash and if you do that this wash works like a charm.

Cleans & holds the waterproofing
Nikwax makes a product that does a great job of getting my horse blankets clean, AND helps retain the proofing. The only dissatisfaction I have is the SUPER-SUPER SMALL print on the bottle! So hard to read that I need a magnifying glass to read the instructions. Also, I absolutely HATE math. Transforming centimeters, milliliters, etc., is a real pain in my can.

Cleans HORSE BLANKETS with clean scent
This bottle will wash several blankets. This is a 33+oz bottle per directions add 5 oz (7oz for hard water). I did not brush or clean blankets before i washed them (I have a “barn washer” in my barn for horse and dog blankets) and this stuff clean it perfectly! I will give this 5 stars because I feel I get my money worth due to the multi washes(I have hard water so I use 7 oz per wash) However Im not going to be so nice with the rug proof as ONE 33+oz bottle ONLY WATERPROOFS 2 HORSE BLANKETS! At $30+ dollars a bottle that seems a little steep … I wish I would of known so I could of ordered 2 bottles at once. However it does seem to proof the blankets. It is cheaper than buying a new blanket though :/ note I have 4 horse blankets I used with this product

I use this for my ponies rainsheet rugs. It helps keep them water proof and clean. I donât have to wash my rainsheet rugs very often but when I do they come up really good with this rug wash.

Got rid of some really bad poop and mud stains on a blanket. I did have to run it thru two times but I think that might have been because the first time I ran it thru inside a blanket wash bag. It still had stains on it after that first wash. After the second wash without the blanket wash bag, the stains were all gone, and it was clean and ready for rewaterproofing.

Fantastic detergent for horse items. I have washed a stable rug and a saddle pad so quickly and easily and Iâve only had the detergent for two days! Iâve had my rugs professionally cleaned in the past and still will get the really dirty ones done by someone else, but this is ideal for washing things that arenât too dirty at home.
