Freshwater Aquarium Treatment

Aquarium salt can be pre-dissolved in water before adding to the aquarium or added directly. More salt should only be added after water changes and only for the amount of water replaced. Otherwise, an overdose may occur.

Note: This is different than table salt, marine salt, or Epsom salt.

To treat, add 1 TBS of salt to every 5 gallons of aquarium water; repeat treatment after each 30% or so water change. In severe cases, you may increase up to 3 TBS for 5 gallons of water after 4-5 days of no improvement. After treatment, do not do a 100% water change to get rid of the salt. Increase frequency of water change schedule, but not volume, and the salt will eventually disappear.

For Use as a Preventative

When buying a fish from the store, it is very likely it already has a illness. Transitioning from different tanks can be stressful and stress decreases the immune system’s ability to fight illness. Therefore, it is recommended to quarantine new fish before putting them in the main tank. Aquarium salt is a mild pre-treatment that can help the fish before any signs of illness are visible.

This is not for use on a daily basis as certain diseases could build up immunity rendering the salt less effective for future use.
