Valuable guide to owning your own horse
Seemed like a pretty comprehensive take on owning your own horse. I have ridden a horse a few times but wouldn’t know enough to take care of one on a daily basis and this book shows the reality of what they need and how much care and energy they need as well. The author’s passion about horses really shines through and it’s a nice guide through the process of wanting to own one or not.

    Great resource!
As someone who’s both new to parenting and horses, this book helped me get up to speed in a way, “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” might.Although we have innate ways of caring for a child, that might not be the case when it comes to animals, especially large, beautiful beasts such as horses. That’s where this book came in and did it ever…like a lifeline. The areas that helped me the most were: Joining Up, Making an Equine Bucket List, and the all to familiar question I’m guessing most of us face in regards to whether to Build or Board. The Equine Bucket List was one I wouldn’t have thought of, but extremely useful as doing the exercise gives clarity and a roadmap, and those two things give calm and a sense of purpose. The book is filled with resources within the book and also an excellent list of additional areas to explore at the end.Really loved this book! It not only got me up to speed as a newbie, but I could really tell the author loves horses and has been in my shoes before, as she comes from a non-horsey household. She explains things very clearly and the book organically brought up questions in my own mind that I need to answer so I have the best relationships with my new friends moving forward.Thank you, Meredith Hill, for putting together such an excellent resource and sharing your love of these animals…it really shines through in your words. Outstanding book!

    New to horses
I’m completely new to horses, and I honestly didn’t know where to start. This simplified it in a way that felt clear and doable, not overwhelming. From feeding, to setting up a safe space, and understanding how to connect with a horse, it actually covered the things I didn’t even thought to ask. The friendly, down-to-earth style made me feel reassured. Now, I’m excited to step into horse ownership.

    Good quality material, overboard advice
I’m not a fan of the advice given in a good portion of this book. There may be high end horses that need this picky of care but I’m grateful I’ve never owned one like that.

A well written survey of owning a horse.
    • I found the first book to be useful and informative even though I used to ride, and I remember much of what I learned about horse management back then. It’s a good way to refresh your knowledge if you’ve spent time away from the horse world. I also wouldn’t hesitate to give it to my horse loving daughter. I appreciated that it approached having a horse as more than just getting ribbons in the ring. If you are a total beginner, I found the book an excellent place to start. Although I think barns should teach a lot of this as part of their lesson plans, the reality is not all of them do. One thing I love most about being around horses is the nature of the relationship and the communication necessary to have it be a fulfilling one. I thought the author did a good job of reminding readers that horses are alike and there is a need to figure out what your specific horse needs to remain happy and healthy. I also really enjoyed the photography.

This book transformed my panic into confidence and my overwhelm into a manageable plan. It’s practical, compassionate, and packed with the kind of wisdom usually only gained through years of mistakes. If you’re staring at your new equine companion thinking, “You’re beautiful… now what?”BUY THIS BOOK FIRST.It’s worth its weight in carrots (and vet bills saved!). Maple and I are eternally grateful.

This book resembles having a serene, intelligent companion who understands your passion for horses without passing judgment. It addresses both the minor and major inquiries you might overlook while fantasizing about your future horse. It is extremely useful, practical, and even amusing at times. If you are genuinely committed to acquiring a horse but still feel somewhat lost, this book alleviates much of the fear associated with the process.
