Customers say

Customers find the sphagnum moss to be of impressive quality and appreciate its moisture retention capabilities. The product works well for orchids and other plants, though opinions about its size are mixed, with some finding it great while others say it’s very small. Moreover, the debris content is a significant concern, with customers reporting it’s filled with dirt and sticks. Additionally, the product has an awful smell, and while some consider it good value, others feel it’s not worth the price.

    Awesome mods for many uses
I purchased this many months ago and was a bit concerned about the odd odor. But after using it I really like this stuff. It’s not as puffy as the high end spagnum but it does work great. And everything I use it for seems to do very well on it. From plants to reptiles, this stuff is great. It’s a great value and expands like crazy. I put my original purchased brick in a square bucket to hydrate it. It blew out the sides of the bucket. This is my second purchase.

    Great value
This Sphagnum Moss expanded into so much MORE than I was expecting. I got the 3oz, which contained the least amount of moss out of all of the options and ended up with waay more than needed. It was super easy to rehydrate and the best part is any extra that isn’t going to get used right off, can be laid out to dry and once COMPLETELY dried it can be stored away for quite sometime. Great product!

A little goes a long way.
I bought the 2.2 lb option and it came as two separate “bricks”. They appeared rather small but I knew they would expand so I put them in a little food storage container with some water, but wow, they got much larger. I took what I needed right away and had tons left over.I decided I needed a big container for the 2nd brick. I put it into a 45 qt container (pictured), added some water, and it expanded beyond what I thought was possible (2nd picture) then I decided to add what was left after I took what I needed from the 1st brick and filled the 45 qt container till it was pretty full (3rd picture).Overall, I’m pretty impressed with the value of what I got. It looks like I hoped it would and seems to be good quality!

Produces a huge amount of natural peat moss. Helps to increase acidity and retain moisture in soil.
I grow most of our vegetables and herbs year around, and discovered that the soil in my pots was more alkaline than it should be. Most of the plants I grow require soil on the acidic side for microbes to break down nutrients into a usable form. My tomatoes and bell peppers were developing yellow spot on the leaves that I found out could be caused from lack of nutrients. Since I regularly supply these plants with nutrients, I knew that lack of nutrients wasn’t the problem. With more research, I found out that microbes in the soil must break down nutrients in the soil in order for the plants to absorb them. For these microbes to do their job, the soil PH should be 6.2 to 6.8. My soil was 7.2.Since Sphagnum moss helps to lower the PH of the soil, I bought this product, and initially, wasn’t impressed by the size of the package – it was really small. So, keeping an open mind, I put the small block in a 3 gallon tub and filled it half full of water. Within a couple of minutes, the block began to grow and continued growing. I moved it to a 5-gallon bucket and added more water. It continued to grow until it filled the bucket, but still, it was not all hydrated. So, I moved what was hydrated back into the 3-gallon tub and filled it. I added more water to the bucket, and this product filled the bucket by the time it was fully hydrated. So, my first suggestion would be to cut this block into at least 4 sections if you don’t need a lot at one time. This sphagnum moss has very long fibers. It would work well for plants that grow in moss or possible for starting seedlings if mixed with perlite and vermiculite. This moss would also be excellent for air layering which is used to root cuttings on hard wood plants or trees to produce new plants. This is one purpose I plan to use it for.For my general purpose to mix it with soil, I have been breaking up the fibers to make them smaller in order to mix them into the soil. This should lower the PH in the soil and eventually the fibers will break down, but I prefer the sphagnum peat moss that is already broken into smaller pieces as it is easier to mix into the soil. I did find a few twigs in this moss, but not too bad for the amount of moss produced in this quantity. Personally, I wouldn’t buy this moss again for my purposes, but it would work great for those growing orchids or other plants that grow in moss.At any rate, lowering the PH for my tomatoes, peppers, and even the veggie greens has had some exceptional results. My tomatoes are consistently producing much larger tomatoes and my pepper plants have a multitude of new flowers and developing peppers.I hope this review is helpful for you.

Some prep needed, but great moss
The smell seems to come from the photo paper inside the package!I was scared about all the reviews stating mold and about the odor, so I soaked the moss a few times and let it air out in a large container. I noticed mold issues only when there was 0 air flow, like in a ziploc bag. I put some peroxide in that batch, and no mold issues since.I tested it in my carnivorous plants, orchids, and for some propagations. All of the props have taken root and pushed new growth, the orchids are settled, and my carnivorous plants (VFT and drosera) have picked up as well.the moss itself is good, light in color and some of it ended up starting to sprout new growth, but it does take some prep if you’re anxious like me. Great if you need moss in a pinch without having to spend $20 on super moss

    Exactly How Described
This Moss came properly sealed and intact. The moss works great for my Carnivorous Plants. Great product and just the right size. Be careful about how much moss you need. There’s a lot in the package, it’s tightly packed.

    Not my favorite orchid medium
I have used coconut husks for my orchids, but I wanted to see if moss would work better. It certainly holds moisture better, but it also holds odors. I thought my cat had peed outside the litter box. It turned out that the smell was coming from the orchid pots! I had to flush them with lots of water and change up my orchid food mixture so my house didn’t stink. I’ll be going back to coco husks soon.

    Great moss that really expands.
This is a LOT of orchid moss! I needed to repot about a dozen orchid plants. I decided to try this moss and was surprised at how much it grows when it’s wet. There were two bricks in the package and I used one and saved the other for another day. Each brick is tightly held together, unlike the bags of moss I previously bought at Lowe’s, so you have to get it wet to separate it. It really expands, so I have a lot left, as well as the unused brick. I’m going to put it on a tray to see if I can dry it out again, because I will use it eventually. The moss seems to be good quality with no dirt or sticks. My plants are doing well in it. I’m pleased with the product.
