How did we get our start?

Many years ago it was noticed that other plants thrived by growing on the surface of New Zealand tree fern leading to the use of it as a growing medium.

What makes our products unique?

New Zealand tree fern fiber is one of the most sought after growing mediums for Orchids, Aroids, and many other rare plant varieties.

What problem are we solving?

We’re carefully harvesting and bringing our customers a product that is truly one of a kind so they can successfully grow and care for their plant and animal companions.

A Wide Variety of Applications

Fernwood products support a wide variety of plants, reptiles, and amphibians.

🌺 Orchids A Plenty- A superior orchid potting medium for your favorite Orchids including Phalaenoposis, Phragmipedium, Dendrobium, Paphiopedilum, Oncidium, as well as a wide range of other epiphytes and ferns.
💕 Capillary Action- Fernwood’s Tree Fern Orchid Substrate has a natural wicking action that sucks up water like a sponge and evenly distributes it throughout the orchid potting medium. Allowing every part of the root structure access to the moisture and nutrients necessary for strong and healthy growth.
💧 Less Watering- Locks in moisture without becoming oversaturated. Meaning that unlike generic orchid potting mix and orchid bark that tend to dry out quickly and need frequent watering, your plants will maintain their ideal moisture level and do so for longer while still getting much needed aeration.
🌿 Superior New Zealand Tree Fern- Fernwood tree fern substrate is softer and more porous than South and Central American alternatives and it’s not to be confused with what others might call Orchid dirt or Orchid soil. Tree Fern is a soft, fluffy, orchid growing media that is responsibly harvested and fully sustainable.
🦎 Reptile Terrariums- Create the perfect reptile jungle or reptile forest floor look and feel with Fernwood tropical substrate. Makes a 100% organic reptile bedding. Used as reptile substrate it encourages burrowing, increases humidity, and acts as a natural odor eliminator.

Customers say

Customers find the orchid growing medium to be of good quality, with positive feedback about its drainage, moisture retention, and plant health, particularly for orchids and epiphytic plants. They appreciate its soil quality, with one customer noting it’s great for mixing with soil and bark, while another mentions it provides better airflow than sphagnum moss. The product receives mixed opinions about its value for money, with some finding it great for the price while others consider it expensive. Several customers report issues with dust content in the product.

Works great as a part of my substrate mix!!
I used this product after being recommended it as a part of an all-purpose, bioactive substrate for my terrariums and isopod culture. It’s texture is really nice to work with, and I love that it’s sustainably harvested compared to something like peat moss (which absolutely ruins bogs!) This tree fern is advertised as a product you could use alone instead of peat moss/typical soil, which is something I agree with! It seems like it holds moisture really well while still draining nicely.I will say that for some reason, my cats REALLY loved the stuff…???? As soon as I brought the bag inside, they were both rubbing on it and nonstop sniffing it, the way they both react with catnip. It’s only a plus in my book, though I thought it was really funny! For obvious safety reasons, I didn’t let them get in contact with the actual tree fern, or ingest it.The only criticism I might have is the price- I bought it at roughly $30 a bag, which as a part of a mix is perfectly fine, since I still have plenty left over. But if you were to use this as a substitute for a soil substrate or for something like pots or a bed, it’s considerably cheaper to get an all purpose potting soil. Otherwise, it’s fabulous!

    Hoping itll Save my Waroqueanum
Great substrate for you amphibians of course but I bought this for my Anthuriums and plants. I am hoping this saves my Waroqueanum that died down all the way to a stump. ice and airy and lightweight. hoping it well be great for a variety of plants that require less dense soil substrate. However this small bag is not a good price. I know this stuff is pricey but its made in the advert to look like a huge bag this is abut the size of a small back back. there is a lot in here and if used sparingly should last you awhile but if you had a large plant this one bag would be it. Manufacture should have other size options also as I only plan to use this for my anthuriums so 50 buck each i want to use buy this is by far the most expensive substrate I’ve ever purchased and I thought pon was going to be my budget killer

    Plants Thrive With This
First, it seems expensive for a soil substrate. However, factor in what it does and it is totally worth the investment. This stuff is light and can be fluffed to gain some volume. It does not compact around the roots of your plants but holds just enough moisture so there is less incidence for root rot. In the long run you keep a healthy plant instead of the expense of replacing one

    replaces sphagnum in my collection
My orchids really dig this stuff. Much different than other tree fern material I’ve used, which is twiggy. Its great to add as a component of a phrag mix, or other genera, but now I’m growing miltoniopsis in straight tree fern and the root growth is extraordinary. Lots more airflow than sphag. It is supposed to decompose slowly, so I’ll try to update review in the future.I’m mixing it with the twiggy stuff to achieve different characteristics for other genera, and have potted several phals up in a mix.

Love this substrate, but a little pricey
While I wish this was cheaper, I know it’s not common or easy to get. That said, I love the texture it adds, particularly when mixed with other substrates (usually topsoil and/or coco fiber) and it’s a lovely feature for my bioactive reptile enclosures.

It looks good, but my plants didnt loved it.
I heard that tree fern fiber was amazing for plants, specially anthuriums. This is what happened to my seedlings one week after i placed them in a mix with perlite on cabinet conditions. Its my first time buying tree fern fiber so, just beware if you are also new to this as well. Shipping was on time.
