Customers say
Customers find this aquarium substrate to be of great quality, working well for both plants and shrimp aquariums, with one customer noting it’s as good as Fluval Stratum. The product receives positive feedback for its appearance, ease of cleaning, and value for money. Regarding size and color, customers have mixed opinions – while some appreciate the decent size and perfect color for shrimp, others find the balls too big and the color darker than expected.

Easy-Clean, Versatile Aquarium Substrate: Perfect for Plants, Fish, and Invertebrates!
I’ve been using this small, dark, round aquarium substrate for my tanks, and it’s been a fantastic choice. Its small size makes it incredibly easy to clean with a smaller syphon, especially in my smaller tanks. The substrate’s dark color adds a beautiful contrast to the vibrant colors of my plants, fish, and invertebrates like snails and shrimp. One of the standout features is its ease of maintenance. With regular cleaning using a small syphon, I can easily remove debris without disturbing my plants or the delicate habitats of my invertebrates. The substrate also provides a stable base for plant roots and promotes a healthy environment for all tank inhabitants.Overall, I’m very impressed with the quality and functionality of this aquarium substrate. It’s versatile, aesthetically pleasing, and makes tank maintenance a breeze. Whether you have plants, fish, or invertebrates, this substrate is a great choice for creating a thriving aquatic ecosystem.

I was scared to use substrate until I used THIS substrate.
I always steered clear of substrate, because it always seemed to be just a big fat mess. I heard some good stuff about this substrate, and since it was economical and convenient, I thought that it was worth a try.I turned out really good. I have a 40 gallon tank, and mixed three bags of this in with the blue and white gravel. Overall, it is more esthetically pleasing, and I have noticed that my plants are doing better. It also really works with aquascaping (landscaping underwater). These tiny little balls are each about the size of one of those tiny styrofoam balls you get when you break apart styrofoam pieces. They are made of clay, which I guess is good for underwater plants, but since they are clay, they help hold the aquascaping together. So, mounds and valleys will tend to stay put. Adding plants would also help hold the aquascaping in place.

Healthy Roots, Happy Plants â Highly Recommend!
Iâve been using Aqueon plant and shrimp substrate for the past four months, and I couldnât be happier with the results! My anthuriums, alocasias, and Jose Buono propagations are absolutely thriving. The substrate provides excellent aeration and drainage, keeping my plants roots healthy and strong.A little goes a long wayâeven the small bag has been more than enough for my needs. Another huge plus is how easy it is to clean and reuse, making it a great long-term investment. If youâre looking for a high-quality substrate that promotes strong growth and is hassle-free to maintain, I highly recommend giving Aqueon substrate a try!

cheap, long lasting shape for plants to take root, but doesn’t contain nutrients
takes a few rinses to clean the dirt, but is exactly as advertised. it’s dark brown/black and spherical. sturdy and easy to use for aquascaping. it doesn’t come with any added nutrients to my knowledge, but the shape and porosity are good for plant roots. plus, some cheap root tabs fix the nutrient problem, while still being cheaper than fluval stratum in the long run (whose nutrients deteriorate after ~1 year).

This is good stuff!
Safe for shrimp and dont glob up, grows plants well, rinses easy, no smell, love the black substrate. Easy to rinse and use.

Perfect for nano tanks
Works great in my nano tank. You can plant aquatic plants in them. It can be a little trick to get them to stay put. But once the roots grow out, it will anchor itself with no problems. These are small uniform beads and looks great in my nano tank.

Definitely will buy again!
Pretty good! Easy to wash as well, with only a few rinses. I have a 10 gallon tank and the smaller portion pack was just enough to cover the top surface evenly, with extra left. I have another sand substrate as well at the bottom of the soil so if you donât have another layer of substrate i recommend getting another bag or the bigger portion rather than the 4lb. The soil balls were a a tiny bit larger than the other substrate soil brands ive seen. But overall they do a fine job with my plants and fish. Pretty good for the price! Overall recommend this substrate for a beginner getting into fish keeping or anyone just looking to start a planted tank.

Looks good. Not cloudy. Doesn’t disintegrate. Not buffering kh nor GH so probably not for caridina shrimps, but should be fine with neo. Will update after I welcome some inhabitants! I like the look
