Man Finds Ten Tiny Puppies Abandoned in a Canyon Pool

What started as a peaceful afternoon walk through the scenic trails of Mission Viejo, California, quickly became a moment that would change lives forever. Jake, a local hiker who often explored the canyon paths to unwind, was enjoying the stillness of nature when he suddenly heard soft, helpless cries echoing from somewhere below. The sound was faint but urgent, like a plea for help carried on the wind. His heart began to race as he followed the cries, unsure of what he might find.

Curious and concerned, Jake followed the noise until he reached an old, abandoned swimming pool hidden along the path. What he saw made his heart sink. Ten tiny, fluffy puppies huddled together, trembling and confused. It was clear they had been left there intentionally, the pool’s flimsy sides now their only shelter.

“I was initially angry,” Jake later told The Dodo, “but also relieved. If they had to be abandoned, at least it was near the animal services center, where someone would find them.”

The Rescue Mission

Jake quickly contacted the City of Mission Viejo Animal Services Center, located just a short distance away. Within minutes, rescuers arrived, gently gathering the fragile pups into their arms. Each one was so small, their eyes barely open, their tiny paws twitching with uncertainty.

“It was immediately obvious that the pups were too young to be away from their mom,” said Brynn Lavison, the city’s director of animal services. The staff could feel how vulnerable the puppies were. They needed warmth, care, and most of all, their mother.

Determined to reunite the family, the rescue team set out to find the puppies’ owner. After a careful search and coordination, they located the person responsible for abandoning them, who also happened to own their mother. When the mama dog was finally brought to the shelter, the reunion was nothing short of heart-melting.

The moment she saw her babies, her tail began to wag furiously. The puppies, sensing her familiar scent, squealed with joy and scrambled toward her. The sight filled the entire team with emotion, a raw reminder of the bond between a mother and her young.

A New Beginning

Together again, the little family moved into a foster home, cared for by one of the shelter’s longtime volunteers and her two sons. The house quickly became a place of healing, filled with playful barks, wagging tails, and gentle cuddles.

“They did quite well while in foster care,” Lavison said. “The boys loved helping with feedings and playtime. It was a family effort.”

Weeks passed, and the pups grew strong and curious. One by one, they found their forever homes, cozy couches to nap on, backyards to explore, and families eager to shower them with love.

Today, those once-abandoned puppies are thriving. They have traded that cold, empty pool for warm laps and happy homes. Their story is a testament to compassion, to the kindness of a stranger who listened to a cry for help and the rescuers who made sure those cries were never heard again.

Lavison hopes this story inspires others to stay alert to the needs of animals around them and to support rescue efforts whenever possible. After all, sometimes a simple act of care can change or even save a life.
