On what should have been an ordinary Saturday night in Burbank, flashing patrol lights and the distant hum of freeway traffic became the backdrop to a heartbreaking loss. Four-year-old K-9 Spike, a devoted Belgian Malinois with the Burbank Police Department, ran toward a dangerous suspect during an intense manhunt near the 5 Freeway and was fatally shot in the line of duty. In a matter of moments, a routine traffic stop turned into a tragedy that would leave officers, loved ones, and an entire community mourning the brave dog who gave everything to protect his team.

K-9 Spike, a Belgian Malinois with the Burbank Police Department, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Saturday night, November 23, 2025. What began as a routine traffic stop near the 5 Freeway ended in heartbreak for an entire community.

Around 6:40 p.m., officers pulled over a vehicle on Buena Vista Street for a code violation. But within moments, the situation escalated. A passenger bolted from the car, sprinting up the 5 Freeway on-ramp, scrambling over an embankment, and disappearing into a nearby neighborhood.

Police quickly formed a search team. Among them was Spike.

At just four years old, Spike was strong, focused, and fearless. He had been with the department for two years and had recently earned his narcotics certification. Highly trained in suspect apprehension, he was skilled at stepping into situations too dangerous for human officers. That night, he did exactly what he had been trained to do.

When Spike located and engaged the armed suspect, at least one gunshot rang out. The bullet struck him despite the ballistic vest he wore for protection. Injured, Spike retreated back to his handler, the person he trusted most in the world.

He was rushed to an emergency veterinarian. Despite every effort, Spike was pronounced deceased.

A Partner, A Protector, A Family Member

For the Burbank Police Department, this was more than the loss of a working dog. It was the loss of a fellow officer.

Spike was described as a partner, not just in the field but in daily life as well. He spent long hours alongside his handler, training, responding to calls, and returning home together. For his handler’s family, Spike was also a loyal companion who shared their space and their routines. His absence is felt both at work and at home, a double loss hard to put into words.

K-9s like Spike are trained to run toward threats so their human partners do not have to. They enter dark spaces first. They confront armed suspects. They trust their handlers completely. Spike fulfilled that role with courage until his final breath.

After he was shot, a joint operation with the Glendale Police Department intensified the manhunt. Additional K-9 units, SWAT teams, and crisis negotiators joined the search. Officers attempted to get the suspect to surrender peacefully. Less-lethal systems were deployed but proved unsuccessful. The suspect then opened fire again, striking two police vehicles. Officers returned fire, and the suspect was killed.

Through it all, the focus remained on the dog who had given everything.

A solemn procession escorted Spike’s body, a quiet and powerful tribute to his service. It marked the first time a Burbank Police K-9 has been shot and killed in the line of duty.

A memorial has steadily grown in front of the Burbank Police Department. Flowers, candles, handwritten notes, and small American flags now line the entrance. Many messages thank Spike for his bravery. Others speak of the smiles he brought to the department and the comfort he gave simply by being there.

He had just celebrated his fourth birthday the week before.

Though his life was short, it was filled with purpose. Spike was more than a uniform and a badge. He was a living, breathing partner who loved his handler and did the job he was trained to do without hesitation.

His story is one of loyalty and sacrifice. And while his loss weighs heavily on the department and community, his courage will not be forgotten.
