The Horse Nutrition Handbook – paperback
The Horse Nutrition Handbook I received this book quite promply and in new condition. I have not had time to read it yet, so I can only add my own reasons for buying it.Being a horse owner has always left me asking myself the question “Am I feeding my horse the way he should be fed? What should I provide for him to keep him healthy and happy? What should I feed or supplement him with?” This book seems to have some good advice in it, so I am looking forward to reading it. And being able to refer back to the book if I need to.The Equine Journal quotes: “On every page you’ll find detailed information on how to keep your horse happy and healthy.”This too is on the front of the book:>> Feeding for maximum health, longevity, and performance.>> Evaluating weight and well-being.>> Understanding proper supplement use and resolving nutritional disorders.>> Managing pastureland for optimal health, safety, and feed value.Written by Melyni Worth, PhDLiving on 4 acres, with only about 1 3/4 +/- of pasture for my horse is a real challenge. It had been woods and still has tree stumps in it. The ground is very poor, with more weeds and non horse eating junk, than it would be if it had of been a fertilized well kept hay field. I’m an older, retired lady and this is the last horse I will have in my life. I have lived on this property for 16 years, virtually no level ground, so this has been a real challenge for me every year.I have to substitute with hay all summer, even tho I have divided this pasture into 4 sections. I know what should be done, but I can’t afford it. So I make the best of what I do have, for my horse to eat. I feel this book will help me in many ways with good advice of what I should or should not feed my horse year around.I also feel that the hay quality in the last several years has not been of very good quality, but you pay a much higher price for hay today than what I was paying in 1997 when I bought my first horse. Even tho I have been involved most of my life with ponies or horses (except the years of raising my family), it was so much different when I lived on a farm as a young girl. I am looking forward to learning all I can in answer to my questions about the proper way to feed my horse and care for him.

Very detailed and scientific approach
I love this book! I have a bachelors in neuroscience and many of these molecular topics I covered in advanced cell biology. After seeing some of these reviews, they are not wrong. It does feel like a textbook, and thatâs why I loved it. I created a meal plan for my 5 yo thoroughbred from this book. I helped him gain a solid 100lbs and heâs been holding a steady weight for 6 months now. This was a great resource for me.

Horse Nutrition Handbook Review by Functional Horsemanship
I picked up a copy of Melyni Worth’s The Horse Nutrition Handbook to review as a possible source to recommend to my clients and readers of my website, […], who often ask me questions about Horse Nutrition than cannot be answer in a few short sentences or even paragraphs. I use Lon Lewis’ Clinical Equine Nutrition as my bible for horse nutrition questions and practices, however Dr. Lewis’ excellent book is like a college textbook and probably too hard to read for the average horse owner. This is where Dr. Worth’s book comes of value. Well organized, easy to read and covers everything that has to do with feeding horses: digestion of horses; nutrients; types of feed; developing your own feeding program; feed storage; and feeding for common horse problems. I recommend this book to every horse owner, particularly the owners of horses on small properties. This is a book you refer to to, time and time again, so keep it handy.

Excellent resource
My knowledge base is medium level and I found this book excellent. It has a large amount of information that is easy to understand but not too basic. You can take what you learn from this book and apply it to your feeding program easily and immediately. I highly recommend this book to everyone who wants to actually understand how to feed their horses instead of trying to sort out fact from fiction when they read feed labels or listen to sales staff give their sales pitch.

Very informative and easy to understand
Great book. Easy to quickly find relevant information. Helpful charts and guides for a quick overview but also detailed sections of you need it. I went from feeling completely overwhelmed about how to change my horse’s feed after I found out she was allergic to a bunch of things, to feeling like I had a good solid plan giving her exactly what she needs for her amount of work.
