Determined to give the best quality of life (kidney & liver disease)
TLDR:Dog has liver & kidney disease.I am using this, a renal diet, immunity boosting mushrooms, milk thistle and goats milk w/probiotics.Day 1 he loved it, will update.I intend to follow up with this review as time goes on. He has a follow up vet appointment in a few weeks where I will request another blood sample to be taken and I will share the results. Background:I have a 14 year old Shih Tzu named Diesel. 14 pounds. He has been my rock and support system for all these years, best believe in his golden years I’m going to give him the best quality of life and love I can afford. He had been picky about eating, chewing/gnawing on treats, had an occasional cough/hack and random bouts of vomiting. The vet diagnosed him with a small heart murmur and his lab work showed signs of stage 2 kidney failure and liver disease. The vet recommended I change his food and provide him supplements. Science diet/KD didn’t feel like a good choice to me.I did some research on his lab work (included photo) and scoured all available resources to better understand his complications. I’m NOT a vet and neither is the internet, but after hours of reading research papers and random commercial websites to understand what was going on I found Dogaware.com a thorough and easy to read resource on both kidney and liver disease. I highly recommend you give it a reading if your fur babe has the same issues.Basically, “the goal is to reduce phosphorus by feeding moderate to high fat, moderate amounts of high quality protein, and low phosphorus carbohydrates to provide calories…fed several small meals throughout the day rather than just one or two large meals.”I looked at all the top rated at-home treatments for his condition and found that certain mushrooms were the main ingredient and milk thistle. I then searched for what foods are recommended for a liver and kidney cleansing/healing diet.I found this dog food and was impressed with great reviews on both Chewy and Amazon. Many of the reviews spoke of it improving their dogs kidney and liver disease issues, let’s give it a shot!I have paired it with goats milk containing pre&probiotics, an organic mushroom blend (ideally for the turkey tail and cordyceps), milk thistle and bene-bac plus probiotic (for an occasional boost). This food is meant as a base, meaning YOU HAVE TO ADD PROTEIN!! So on the side I have prepared ground chicken in coconut oil paired with recommended vegetables (i.e. sweet potato, carrots, peas, green beans, kale, pumpkin, asparagus). *note* if you can get green Tripe it’s supposed to be really good for them).BASICALLY MY PRINCE IS EATING BETTER THAN ME LOL1st review 6/26/2020:Opening the food I was very impressed, it just looks “healthy.” I also like that it has ground egg shell included for calcium and it balances out phosphorus. I added one scoop with hot water and let it soak. After a few minutes I mixed in the ground chicken-veggie mix I had prepared, a tiny bit of mushroom powder, his first 1/2 dose of bene-bac plus and the goats milk. (The milk thistle will be delivered in two days).Honestly, I wasn’t prepared for his reaction. He’s usually a bit picky and will stare me down if he doesn’t like it. He chowed it down with no hesitation!!!Only time will tell if this will be a component to his recovery, but I look forward to utilizing this as the foundation to his success. Please note: I know there’s a kidney supplement Dr. Harvey offers, but it had limited reviews and my intuition felt it would be best to stick with the mushrooms and milk thistle which I know are key components to many of the elixirs offered.July 24th update:TLDR: Dog is happy, energetic and fur looks great.I haven’t had a chance to go back to my vet yet for lab work, hopefully soon. However, He must have been feeling sick before because within a week of his new diet he was more energetic, playful and would actually go on walks whereas before I practically had to drag him out. Also, his breath smells WAY better, his fur is looking thicker and shinier, he has an appetite now and has gained a 1.5 lbs or so.I have been meal prepping for the week. I prepare and store the meat cooked in coconut or salmon oil and Dr Harvey’s mixed with the mushroom powder separately. When serving meals I add the meat to a bowl, reheat it in the microwave, take it out and add the pre-prepared dr Harvey’s. I Then top it with the Epakitin, milk thistle, goats milk with probiotics and occasionally benebac plus for a boost.**NOTE: I have since included Epakitin a recommendedchitosan-based phosphate binder to sprinkle on his food. If you read the articles you’ll know why its important. Will update again soon xoxo

Hydration! Lowers bun and creatinine- my dog loves it!!!
My 10yr lab/bloodhound mix ho is 65 lbs was diagnosed early May 2025 with first stage or start of kidney failure- it was horrible news. The vet sent us out with 8lbs of hills Kd food for 60.00. She wouldnât eat it. I tried adding the canned kid food to the kibble..still meh on food and the cans are 7.00 each, so I started researching- I found this base. I added about 5-6 oz of slow cooked chicken beast in water and shedded it out. Added organic steamed baby carrotsâ¦and mushroom powder along with omega 3 fish oil to her food. The big thing with kidney failure is HYDRATIONâ¦and hereâs how I tweak her diet after her 1 month check up we just had. The vet thought I was definitely doing wrong by dog feeding her a âhomage dietâ he really put that down UNTIL her bloodwork came back 30 mins later. Her Bun was back to normal. Her protein was down 3 points and sheâd lost 2lbs. So the vet was thrilled and told me to keep doing what Iâm doing but reduce her to 1.5 oz of chicken per meal, add rice for carbs to keep her weight up and add beans to her food. So Iâm now slow cooking her beans (more hydration) rice (more hydration) and I just hit Phos-bind In. That will attach to the proteins in blood and force it it when uses the bathroom. This reduces the phosphorus in her blood created from animal proteins- she can have all the vegetable proteins she wants. And now Iâm cutting her omega 3 oil in 1/2 and using evoo or flaxseed oil to her food daily. This base mix is 50% hydration – my dog in 2 weeks from starting this diet is drinking normally again. Had not incontinence issues anymore and boy is she back to 100% of her energetic self. She loves the food, loves the rice, carrots and beans. I cook it all myself because you donât want the sodium of pre made. We go back in 3 months and see what her bloodwork says. But this food and the trouble of cooking all her food and bathing each item separately is really worth it. I do see the improvement in her before adding the beans and carbs last night. I canât wait to try the phosphorus binder. I just want her happy and pain free as long as I am blessed to have her. BadThe 10 lbs bag last about 6 weeks for me with a large dog. The cost of everything is about 1/2 or more than if I was buying hills kibble and canned food. Nope not healthy for them. Kibble is the devil for real. It hurts their bodies. It over cooked and not moist. I need to find her some kind of hard thing to scraper teeth to eat. Bones are no due to animal productsâ¦but sheâs so much happier. No more waking me up to go out 3 times a night. Or wetting the bed (happened 2 times/ first time I took her in that week to the vet- sheâs never wet the bed In Life) I hope this review helps. I wax overwhelmed and spent 1.5 weeks researching hours a day on how to best approach kidney failure/ disease in dogs. Iâm glad I tried this food. Itâs a life saver. I wish Iâd feed her this since I got her at 7 weeks old. I doubt weâd be seeing kidney issues now if Iâd known better.

I have been using this food for the past two months on my 2 dogs. One of them has early stage 1 kidney disease, as she is losing protein in her urine. She is on medication, Benezapril, and I am going to wait another month or so and then do another urine test specifically for her protein ration (UPC urine test) and see where we are at. My other dog has no kidney issues, but she is on the same food. They both love it, and I like how easy this food is to prepare. I add specific amounts of cooked protein (chicken thigh or hamburger) and then add the Dr. Harvey’s fish oil. I hope Amazon continues to supply this food, as I live in Canada and ordering directly through Dr. Harvey’s will probably cost more as it has to be shipped to Canada, and then I’ve been told that there will probably be a “customs duty charge” added onto my order. I get worried as every time I order this through Amazon (twice now) as it indicates the item is “in stock”, but then it takes several days until the item is shipped and then I get notice as to when the expected delivery date will be. As another customer mentioned, PLEASE DON’T STOP offering this food as we have little doggies that love it, and most of all need and depend on it 🙂
