Excellent Reference for feeding and proper equine health
I have finally found a fantastic reference book for the proper feeding and health for the equine species. I found out that with feeding hay to your horse, you can find out which kind is best for him or her. I was especially grateful to find that with grass hays, even though they may not have as much protien as legume hays, some horse owners only feed that kind of hay to their horses and they do just fine. Every year Judy TenEyck, my grandmother, has over 100 grass hay bales on her place. They are always in the small rectangular sizes. Those size bales can weigh from 50 to 120 pounds. Handling those is better than trying to move the huge round or huge rectangular ones by hand. Those can wiegh over 1000 pounds! You would need a tractor for those. I should at least be gratful that she never has her hay bales made that big. I sent her an email telling her that if I were to ever have a horse or two of my own, I would actually be begging for her grass hay bales. The hay chapter in this book is great for looking into that kind of matter. As for equine wellness, the chapter about the diseases that horses can catch is greatly detailed too. I also love the cheat sheets at the beginning of this book. It has great charts of how a healthy horse should look, how to know when to call the vet right away, and the amount of protien in different hay bales. If you really love your steed, and you want it perfectly healthy, this book if definitly for you!

    going back to country living
In 2010 I purchased 15 acres of land in southern ohio,I have lived in the city for 40 years but spent 8 years on a farm, although I helped take care of farm animals I never really learned how to care for them , I want to get 4 horses and deccided to start reading, I have about 4 years before I will be ready to move south. I like the dummies books because of the way they are written, there are notes and inserts of important info that I find very helpful in the learning process, no book will tell it all but the dummies books come vcery close. I would recommend this book for everyone that owns a horse or is thinking about getting one(or more).I also purchased chickens for dummies and goats for dummies. And feel the same about them, these books are also very easy to use as a reference if you have a question the way the books are set up you can access the information very easy.

How to and simple to do tips on maintaining a healthy horse. Covering any topic you may be wanting to know more on. Great basics and great attitude about all horses. Thanks.

horse health & nutrition for Dummies
This book is on a level where most people can understand what is being told to them without going over their heads. This is why it is called “dummies” becauses most people our average american people and this book talks to them on this level and not over their heads, so they can understand what is going on with their horses.
