There are few things more challenging than a chihuahua with the runs! Managing your dog’s diarrhea can be a challenge, especially if you’re feeding the wrong food. We asked our Facebook Chihuahua community the following question: “What’s the best food for a chihuahua that frequently has diarrhea?” We received hundreds of replies, and we have summarized some of the best answers below.

Best Foods for Chihuahuas with Diarrhea

Prescription dog food from your vet. I think that it’s called Hills Science Diet ID canned dog food

Science diet sensitive stomach and skin. The chicken recipe. It works really well for my chihuahua that has the runs occasionally, as long as I don’t give her people food and just the Science Diet, she doesn’t have the runs.

Our vet recommended rice water until her tummy could calm down, followed by pure pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix) mixed with rice. You can add shredded plain chicken after a day. I would still call your vet because I’m not a vet and don’t want to speak for your vet. This is what worked for my girl & she absolutely loved the pumpkin.

My Chihuahua does well when he eats dog food. If he gets the stomach gurgle, I give him some Pedialyte. Not much, usually by later that day, he is doing better. I did have some other dogs that I had to give Science Diet ID to. Then, after speaking to a lot of people. I was told to try Wellness Duck. I switched him over to that and never had another issue. Most of my dogs that I gave this to never had stomach issues. This was when Old Mother Hubit owned Wellness.

Yeah, cook up some plain white rice and some bland chicken. Shred up the chicken and add it to the rice. Give the Chihuahua a little bit of each. And give a teaspoon of canned pumpkin puree. The real stuff is not for pies. Do that for so many days, and it should help. That’s what I do for my dogs

My chihuahua is white…. Everyone I’ve had that is white has diarrhea issues…. Turns out it’s a grain allergy…. The only thing that keeps her regular is half instinct raw beef and prescription Hills Biome

Consult your vet first and foremost. Might try FortiFlora, which is a probiotic, and a diet of boiled chicken and rice to help stabilize your little one’s intestines. Good luck.

You might need to incorporate a probiotic into his diet. One of mine was having issues also & I got this probiotic off Amazon. I actually crumble it up & mix it in all 4 of my Lil ones’ food! It really helped!

My baby had a very sensitive stomach, having had a few abdominal surgeries. Switched him to Royal Canin Low Fat GI and worked great. He still had it now and then. Rice and boiled chicken or ground beef were great, and he loved them. Also always had a prescription of Metronidazole on hand. That usually wiped it out in a day!

I use Pro Plan sensitive skin and stomach, that’s the only thing I found that works for my chihuahua, and it’s veterinarian-approved

My girl has a sensitive stomach & sometimes has diarrhea and is on Hills Prescription Gastrointestinal Biome. She’s done very well on the food & it helps GI & helps form stool. I also give her plain unsweetened yogurt, & if she has an upset tummy, I give her pumpkin & a tiny bit of Pepto

I use Rachael Ray’s Nutrish the chicken with veggies, and my chihuahua’s is always firm!

Get his blood checked; it’s rather expensive, but it is worth the trouble. My daughter had to do for 2 of her 5 little dogs that had the same trouble. Bad intolerance to some proteins and grain… these 2 are on raw frozen discs of turkey. She prepares them the day before, about 45 grams in the morning and the same at night. Her dos are about 3 pounds.

Farmer’s Dog gave our 13-year-old chi a new start! She had severe allergies and GI issues. I was cooking for her before starting with the Farmer’s Dog! She loves it—she is much healthier and happier! She acts like a pup

A vet should diagnose this, take a stool sample, and examine it immediately. My chihuahua got colitis once and was very sick. He’s on Royal Canin low-fat gastrointestinal and forti flora once daily.

We buy Fromm, they sell to small pet stores, not box stores, we use it for the dog and cat, and they have done very well with it. We had one cat that threw up everything, and this brand didn’t unless she binged because she liked it so much

Maybe you want to try this for your chihuahua, it might help my chiweenie, part dachshund and part chihuahua, loves it. I got it at Walmart; Amazon probably has it too

Improving Your Chihuahua’s Digestive Health Through Diet

Frequent diarrhea in Chihuahuas can be concerning, but the right diet and feeding routine can often make a big difference. Many owners find success with simple, easy-to-digest foods like boiled chicken and rice, pumpkin, probiotics, or sensitive-stomach formulas while identifying possible food allergies or triggers. Because Chihuahuas have delicate digestive systems, keeping meals consistent and introducing new foods slowly is especially important. With careful monitoring and guidance from your veterinarian when needed, you can help your Chihuahua maintain better digestive health and enjoy a happier, more comfortable life.

Always consult your vet before making any health changes to your chihuahua’s diet, especially if they frequently suffer from diarrhea, as there may be other medical issues that need to be addressed.
