There are few things more challenging than a pug with the runs! Managing your dog’s diarrhea can be a challenge, especially if you’re feeding the wrong food. We asked our Facebook Pug community the following question: “What’s the best food for a pug that frequently has diarrhea?” We received hundreds of replies, and we have summarized some of the best answers below.

Best Foods for Pugs with Diarrhea

When my pug’s tummy is upset, she gets chicken with cauliflower rice. I also include 100% pumpkin, good for her anal glands. Get a food sensitivity test from your vet, too. I hope she or he feels better soon.

1. I’m sure you’re doing this, so this is not judgement but if it’s been more than 2 days, call your vet.

2. Is the pup still eating and drinking? Yes? That’s so good. No, not great.

3. Rice and either PLAIN hamburger or boiled/steamed chicken.

Feed a little at a time. Once the stools are solid, you can introduce kibble slowly into the rice. My pug had a super sensitive stomach, so this was the vet’s recommendation, also Pepto and Pedialyte. Again, talk to your vet. Tummy issues are super common with pugs.

My little girl developed pancreas issues. She almost didn’t survive. Had diarrhea and vomiting. The vet prescribed Hill’s Science Diet Sensitive dog food for her. She’s doing much better. Check with the vet.

Hills’ prescription Biome! My pugs have been doing great ever since! But it must be prescribed by your veterinarian

I put my girl on Royal Canin gastrointestinal dry and wet food with Purina probiotics from the vet. I was desperate, tried everything, and I am not a fan of dog food from the vet, but felt at her age it’s about quality of life. Knock on wood, but she hasn’t had diarrhea since last summer. I plan to keep her on this food and give her a prebiotic when needed.

The

Pro plan does canned food for gastrointestinal problems. Called EN. I know they use it at the vet practice my daughter works at for upset, sensitive tummies, and post-operative meals.

Natural Balance limited ingredients dog food, wet or dry. First, I would do a vet trip when my little man got sick. They treated him for a stomach infection. His stomach was always iffy, but after the meds and switching food to the above, he and I managed

I feed mine Rachel Ray, maintained her ideal weight, grains, chicken by-products, and red food coloring is bad for them.

Plain cooked rice with a tiny bit of cooked small chicken pieces for 2-3 days. Then slowly decrease the rice and start adding a normal diet over about 4 days. Ensure there is always plenty of fresh water available.

If you keep switching foods without weaning them into a new one, this is why your pug is having diarrhea. Also, try a basic diet of Hamburg and white rice with whole pumpkin mixed in. Not the pumpkin pie. 100% organic pumpkin. Like a teaspoon. Your pug could be allergic to chicken. It’s a common allergen for dogs. Read labels. Take your pug to the vet. I have mine on a limited-ingredient diet. One protein. Lamb. It’s easier on the stomach.

Raw….you don’t have to make it…brands like Primal…Stella and Chewy are a good start. Slowly transition in the meantime, go to your local pet store and try goat’s milk. Add some pumpkin puree to the food in the meantime.

I had the same issue, after multiple food changes and many messes along the way. I was donating to a local rescue, and they asked for 4HEALTH brand from Tractor Supply…so I tried small bites, and he has never had any issues, completely healthy boy.

Try hypoallergenic, grain-free food that preferably is only meat or fish and vegetables, and not rice! It is common for pugs to be allergic to grains, including rice. Also, stop giving any treats for a while, and definitely no human food if you are! But if things don’t settle after a week, then definitely go to the vets and request an allergy test, best thing I ever did for my baby xxx

Quit giving her so many different kinds of food, probably the reason she has it, give her food of one kind for awhile so the diarrhea stops, she’ll let you know what foods she likes, mine is almost 10 yrs old and I’ve feed her nothing but chicken breast boil, maybe dog food 10 times in her life and this her, she weigh about 16-18 pds never a problem with her weight and she very healthy

Better Nutrition for Pugs With Digestive Problems

Always consult your vet before making any health changes to your pug’s diet, especially if they frequently suffer from diarrhea, as there may be other medical issues that need to be addressed.
