For most of his life, Sen the moon bear lived beneath a roof of metal instead of an open sky. Captured from the wild when he was only a tiny cub, he spent the next 27 years locked inside a cramped cage on a bile farm in Vietnam. Day after day passed with almost nothing changing around him. He could not roam, climb, or explore the forest the way bears are meant to. The world outside his cage continued on without him. Then one day, everything finally changed when rescuers arrived to give Sen the freedom he had been waiting for his entire life.
Sen was taken from the wild when he was just a baby. Instead of growing up in forests and climbing trees, he spent his entire life confined to a cramped metal cage. Farmers kept him there to harvest his bile, a substance used in traditional medicine. Day after day, year after year, Sen endured a life of isolation and suffering.
Bile farming has long been criticized for its cruelty. Bears are kept in cages barely large enough to move. Many spend decades like this, deprived of natural behaviors and basic comfort. Sen’s life followed the same heartbreaking pattern.
Everything changed when the rescue team from Animal Asia stepped in. After years of negotiation, they convinced Sen’s owners to surrender him. It was the moment that would finally open the door to freedom.
When Sen was released from his cage, the world must have felt overwhelming. For the first time in 27 years, he could look up and see the open sky above him. Fresh air filled his lungs. The sunlight touched his fur. It was a simple experience for most animals, yet for Sen, it was something he had been denied almost his entire life.

At the sanctuary, Sen slowly began to discover what it means to be a bear again. The grass beneath his paws was unfamiliar at first. The wide spaces felt strange after decades of confinement. Caregivers watched closely as he explored his surroundings with cautious curiosity.
Soon, Sen began to relax. His body language softened. He started interacting with the environment around him and even made new bear friends at the sanctuary. The lonely years inside a cage were finally behind him.
Each step he took outside was a quiet victory. Climbing, walking, resting in the sun. These simple moments marked the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
A Long Fight to End Bear Bile Farming
Although bile farming is now illegal in Vietnam, many bears remain trapped in captivity. Around 150 moon bears are still waiting for rescue and a chance at freedom.

Animal Asia continues working tirelessly to locate and free these remaining bears. Each rescue involves complex negotiations, medical care, and long-term rehabilitation to help the animals recover from years of trauma.

Sen’s story is both heartbreaking and hopeful. His life shows the deep cruelty that bile farming inflicted on thousands of bears. At the same time, it proves that change is possible.
Today, Sen can feel the wind, stretch his legs, and rest under the open sky. After 27 years in darkness, he finally gets to experience the life he was always meant to live.
