My Dog Maya had kidney disease. I would buy her Hills then switch over to Purina one. It got expensive. I fed her mostly can food. She did well.

15 year vet tech here, also had a boxer with kidney disease for 3 years. Mine are hills K/d I did wet and dry. I also had to give here cerenia (anti nausea medication) and Omeprazole (acid reducer) to get her to eat. If I did not give it to her she would not eat but this was the last 6 weeks of her life when that happened. My only issue for her was she was allergic to chicken so the k/d made her skin so bad and she licked herself so much. The biggest thing is watching the protein and calories as the kidneys don’t process them like they used to when they were functioning properly. The other thing is to make sure there is not a lot of different fruits and veggies as it can cause abnormalities in the pH levels of the urine eventually leading to UTIs and or crystals or stones in the urine.

My oldest dog that passed away last year had to be on low protein foods because of his kidneys, I found a vegetarian dog food by natural balance, that he liked/tolerated and when I needed to mix it up I cooked rice and boiled hamburger with carrots for him..

Thankfully, we’ve not had that specific issue. We feed all our dogs ‘gentle giants’ and have had 0 food related issues in over 10 yrs of using it. Had a dane/Pyrenees mix, purebred blue staffy, husky mix, two pitt mixes, and another dane mix. When we switched, all the skin issues, potty issues, and coat issues cleared up and we haven’t looked back.

Hills Prescription diet K/D, they make a canned stew that most dogs will eat. Purina NF, Royal Canin renal support. They will need to get fluids regularly to help flush out the kidneys. They also have medicine, such as Entyce, that is an appetite stimulant, and cerenia for nausea.

RETIRED LEO. SQUAREPET DOG FOOD. LOW PHOSPHORUS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS PUPS. What is good about this food is that it is the same as ROYAL CANIN and it doesn’t need a prescription. It is also less expensive.

Taste of the wild, it is for Picky Eaters I tried all kinds before I found 1 my dog liked and also if you go or call a few pet stores some of them will let you turn a bag of food you bought from them back in with the receipt If your dog doesn’t like it, you can bring it back in and trade it for a different bag.
