Sisal and Wood Cat Scratch Hammock
This is a combination cat scratching mat and hammock bed. It is a large sisal mat. Sisal comes from the Agave sisalana plant and is an eco-friendly fiber. The fibers are obtained by crushing and scraping the leaves to get the tough strands.Scratching is actually an evolutionary function in felines. It combines territorial marking, claw maintenance, muscle stretching and exercise, stress relief, and food-related survival behaviors. Domestic cats retain all the same instincts as large wild cats like lions and tigers. It is important to give indoor cats the proper environment to keep their claws healthy while also protecting your furniture and home.This sisal hammock provides a nice surface for scratching, as well as a relaxing bed. It comes disassembled, and with an instruction sheet that is minimal. Some assembly is required – however, the pieces can fit together in several incorrect ways and only one correct one.When you connect the short legs to the longer wooden piece, I found by trial and error that the “receptacle plugs” or “studs” (look like little hats with threaded insides) fit on the outside of the short wooden legs on the side where the bore holes are flush with the rest of the wood. The corresponding screws go on the inside, where there are countersink holes around the bore holes. Countersink holes are conical depressions around a screw hole that allow the screw to “sink” below the surface of the wood.The sisal mat has two dowels that need to be inserted into the end pockets. Then the sisal mat is stretched to fit between the pairs of short wooden legs and screwed through the top bore holes and into the dowels.The mat is quite nice once you finish the assembly. The sisal is a good scratching surface and is also a comfortable resting surface. The price is competitive, and it is a very nice present for your cat, or as a gift for someone else’s cat.
