Good siphon, great for bare bottom, but will suck up sand
Luigi’s fish tank cleaner/siphon:Summary: Bare bottom tank 10gal- works great, quick water change, sucks up debris.Sanded bottom 10 gal.- don’t get too close to the sand or it will suck up the sand.Review:I had been using this siphon for over a year now on a 10 gallon bare bottom quarantine tank. Worked well for water changes and removing uneaten food, waste and debris. (At one point I attached a foam paintbrush onto the end of the siphon w/ a rubber band. Worked well to clean the bottom of the glass while the siphon sucked up mostly what ever the foam brush got off the bottom.)I more recently wanted to use the 10 gal. quarantine tank as a grow out tank for Hiplisoma pandas. (I never had to treat the QT tank so i figured I would use the same supplies). After hearing from an expert cory breeder that they should grow up not being on a bare bottom to prevent bottom fin decay, I added sand to the tank when I made the conversion. This siphon still works great for water changes but not so great for trying to vacuum the sand b/c boy does it suck up sand. I know the product is made for gravel per product description. It sucks up less sand if I disturb the sand to get the debris up and keep the siphon an inch or two above the sand. Still sucks up a little but much less than trying to use the siphon to disrupt the top layer of sand.It does suck up water quickly, especially in a smaller tank, but physics and all.When I purchased this siphon it was just under $10, which seems like a good price.This siphon is still going strong at this time.

Effective and a must for any aquarium
This product is very easy to use. It works well for any size of aquarium. This is my second time purchasing them as the first one we accidentally pump a root of a plant inside, it got stuck and broke. To avoid getting the stone or large items inside, please yse the attachment that have the small holes with it to filter them. For cleaning the bottom of the tank, this water pump is very durable and lightweight.

Great for draining water, stinks at sucking up dirt
After reading numerous reviews, I thought I’d try this as I only have a 5 gallon tank set up for my great niece who tends to overfeed when she visits.I’ve had salt and fresh water tanks in the past, but don’t have any now nor do I have any of the equipment. This seemed to be a good choice for this size tank which houses one betta and instead of changing the whole tank I just wanted to clean the debris in the small stones.This could suck up the stones and debris if placed directly onto the stones, but I only wanted the debris. I tried stirring up the tank and pointed the nozzle right at and within the debris and it barely took it in.The darned thing works great for draining the tank, which I did ultimately – I cleaned the whole tank, kept 1/4 of the water for the bacteria, topped it with fresh distilled water and waited a day to replace the fish.Darned peanut tank was more work than I expected!Its easy to clean out the hose, but getting it dried is a whole different matter. After leaving it in my shower to dry for 3 days, I hung it over a bucket in my basement.

The Best Aquarium Siphon

Try this siphon instead!This siphon is the best design because all you have to do is squeeze the bulb a few times to get the water going. It works even when there isn’t much water left in the tank – if you are cleaning a tank out to sell it, for example.If you want to use it to clean up chunky debris, you can remove the strainer from the siphon, but I CAUTION you not to suck up anything solid – like a snail or a plant bulb – or it can get stuck.That is the only feature that could be improved. If the bottom tube could come off, you would be able to remove anything that got lodged in the bulb’s valves. As it is, you have to use a skewer or something similar, and try to get the item out of the flap. (This is not a flaw in the product. I’m sure the siphon is NOT designed to be used without the strainer on top.) This siphon is a great value.
