In the Diocese of Caruaru in Pernambuco, Brazil, a small parish has become a refuge for those who often go unseen. Father João Paulo Araujo Gomes has welcomed countless stray dogs into his church and home, turning a simple act of compassion into a life-changing mission for abandoned animals in his community.

For years, the priest has taken in dogs who were left to survive on the streets. He bathes them, feeds them, pays for their medical care, and gives them a safe place to sleep under his own roof. Many of the dogs stay close to him as though they understand how deeply he cares for them. To him, they are not temporary guests. They are part of his daily life and part of his heart.

Every Sunday, Father João Paulo brings one of his rescued dogs to Mass. The dogs sit near the front of the church or beside him at the altar, calm and content as worshippers gather. People attending Mass are invited to meet them, learn their stories, and spend time with them after the service. Week after week, dogs who once knew only hunger and fear now have a chance to be seen by loving families who may offer them a home. Many adoptions have happened this way, one gentle introduction at a time.

The priest often reflects on how this mission began. He once said, “I did not rescue them, I was rescued by them.” For him, caring for animals is not separate from his work with people. It is an extension of the love he believes everyone deserves. When criticism arose about bringing animals into a sacred space, he responded with quiet conviction. He explained that love for animals strengthens love for people, and that compassion is never a distraction from faith.

He continued to expand his efforts, setting up food and water stations outside the church that stay stocked day and night. He works with local universities to support spay and neuter programs and offers help to rescue groups whenever he can. The most vulnerable dogs, especially those who are sick or fearful, stay with him in his rectory where they can heal in safety.

This horrifying act of violence should never have happened, and the people responsible must never be allowed to harm another animal again.

Despite limited resources, his mission grows stronger. Parishioners now expect to see a new dog each Sunday, and many look forward to meeting the animals as part of their worship experience. With each passing month, more people in the community have begun donating blankets, food, and medicine to support the effort. Some families who adopted one of the church’s dogs still return regularly, allowing the priest to see how well the dogs are thriving. These reunions often bring tears to his eyes, especially when a once fearful dog now approaches with confidence and joy.

The impact of his work goes far beyond simple rescue. Children in the parish have become more compassionate after spending time with the dogs. Elderly members often describe the presence of the animals as comforting and soothing. Even visitors from outside the region have traveled to attend Mass after hearing about the dogs who sit near the altar. The church has become a symbol of refuge, not only for people seeking spiritual guidance, but for animals who once had nowhere to go.

Father João Paulo’s example has inspired others across Brazil to create similar programs in their own communities. Small churches, independent rescuers, and local groups have reached out to learn from his approach. Many say his story opened their eyes to the idea that compassion can be shown in countless ways, and that faith grows stronger when paired with action.

Father João Paulo continues to bring new rescues to Mass each week. With every introduction, each dog receives a precious opportunity to feel wanted. His message remains simple and steady. Adopted animals do not ask for much. They offer love freely, and the families who welcome them home often feel rescued themselves.
