The Exo Terra Reptile Den allows easy observation of reptiles and amphibians while in their hiding and sleeping spot without opening the terrarium and disturbing the animals. Digging out animals by removing the substrate and terrarium decoration is an underestimated stress factor that now is completely eliminated. The rock-cover can be removed from outside the tank to observe the hiding and sleeping animals and placed back on the glass. The two pieces are kept together through the glass by strong magnets. The rock is insulated to keep the tunnel system cooler than the ambient temperature inside the terrarium. Some moistened moss or substrate can be placed inside the Reptile Den to keep it moist.

Adorable!
I love this thing. I don’t even mind that there are some minor issues with it because its just so amazing to be able to peek in on my little guy while he sleeps. Although my leopard gecko is just a baby, I purchased a size Medium for him to grow into.This item is sturdy and has a good weight to it. It looks attractive and I would say semi-realistic. To install it, you place the large portion on the inside of the terrarium in a way in which the doorway is accessible to your reptile. Then the small piece goes on the outside of the tank and once placed on the opposite side of the glass, it adheres by magnets to close the den. Simple, right? Well…there are two minor flaws I should mention.First of all, on my terrarium (Aqueon I think) there is a plastic edge along the bottom both inside and outside. When the rock is in place on the inside floor of the terrarium, it is low enough that the plastic edge partially covers the bottom magnet, both weakening the ability of the pieces to close as tightly and also making the rock less safe. I solved this issue with a bit of padding. I took an extra scrap of terrarium carpet (cardboard would work equally as well) and, after folding it in half, placed it under the rock. This boosted the rock up about a quarter of an inch and allowed all the magnets to sit flush against the glass.Once my gecko discovered this rock, it became an instant hit. This is now his favorite hiding spot (I also made this his warm hide since I figured he would choose this one over the others). Now here comes minor issue number two. When you remove the outer rock for viewing, if your animal is up against the glass, it is possible that a toe or tail may fall between the glass pane and the inner rock. When I saw this occur I just didn’t put the outer rock back on right away. I went about my business of my geckos nightly feeding and then once he moved, I replaced the rock without incident. This is just an issue to be aware and conscientious of in the use of this product.

Be careful!
I bought this for my sons leopard gecko because I liked that he would be able to see his lizard. I like the inside where the lizard hides with the 2 levels and it looks really nice in our tank. I have not had a problem with it tipping or anything, but I also use a carpet. My only complaint was the outside part. I followed the directions and put the inside piece right to the glass, and the outside piece wouldn’t hold and when it fell off, it broke my toe. I tried a couple more times with the outside piece thinking I didn’t align the magnets right, but it would not hold, so I moved the inside piece back further in the tank so my leo is warm and feels like he has a hidey hole and we can see him.

Geckos love it
I already have the small and medium sized Reptile Dens. My geckos love them. I have a habit of checking on the geckos, and I enjoy viewing them when they are in their Dens. The added opportunity to interact with them through the glass is a great bonus.My male, Carrot, doesn’t fit in the smaller sized Dens(he tries, though!), so I ordered him a large. It arrived with a hole cracked into one end, looking like it had been dropped in its package. The customer service at Josh’s Frogs was excellent. I sent pics of the den(still wrapped) and they replaced it quickly.As for the geckos, they all love the large as well as the rest, and Carrot finally has a burrow he can fit in.

Leopard Geckos LOVE this thing 😀
Pros:- provides a great cool hide for your reptiles (keeps the heat out, keeps the cold in)- magnets are extremely strong, just make sure the bigger part that’s in the tank is secure to the wall, or if you reattach the second piece, it may injure your reptile- my leopard geckos LOVE this thingCons:- hahaha, none :DOverall another great product from Exo Terra. If you’re reading posts about geckos losing their tails, it’s because the OWNER decided not to make sure it was secure to the wall before reattaching the second piece. Common sense y’all, if you remove the magnetic second piece, and the primary piece falls a bit to the side, and you reclose it, there’s great risk of injuring your reptile whose toes or tail might be in between the gap.

My Lizard went in it immediately!
I have a full grown adult and he loves this rock/hide out. He was surprised when I opened it from the other side, but didn’t spook him into leaving; even the crickets like it in there. As long as you have a stable bottom the rock does not move around when putting the back on and off. Came well packaged

Arrived broken
I ordered a medium reptile den for my leopard gecko as part of his new desert terrarium setup. The den arrived today broken in several pieces although the packaging was undamaged & it was well packed. It looks to be an interesting item but does appear to be rather fragile so I’m rethinking if this will work for me as I’m worried that my cats might knock the outer piece off & break it. My other concern is that the item has a really strong resin smell. I assume this would dissipate with washing & time, but I wouldn’t want my gecko coming into contact with it until this odor had gone.

Great design – My gecko’s favorite place to be
My gecko LOVES this cave – she sleeps in it all the time. If I remove this cave from her tank, she’s noticeably upset. The magnetic feature works great with one small exception. The cave does not sit perfectly flat against the bottom of her tank. If you pull the magnetic outer piece off, the cave will rock back a few millimeters and may disturb your critter. I found an easy fix to this by putting a small piece of paper towel under the cave to keep it pressed against the glass at all times, regardless if the outer shell is attached or not. The cave is big enough to fit a fully grown Leopard Gecko (see attached photo of my dog, avoiding her humid hide like a dork). Highly recommend this cave.

looks awesome. the magnets are strong so the outside lid stays on, but it snaps to the housing part hard because they are so strong. it scares the reptile and could brake the glass. I stuck thin felt pads next to the magnets and problem solved.

Ich hatte den Vorteil, dass ich mir diese Höhle schon beim Züchter meiner Leopardgeckos ansehen konnte. Ich war begeistert, und habe gleich bestellt. Zuerst versehentlich die kleine, könnte sie aber ohne Probleme an Amazon zurück senden, um mir die mittlere zu bestellen. Die Höhle ist sehr stabil, hat sehr gute Magnete, und ist wegen der glatten Oberfläche auch leicht zu reinigen. Da es im inneren so eine Art Höhlengänge gibt,haben gleich alle drei Tiere die Höhle angenommen, und fühlen sich dort sehr wohl. Da sie auch ihre erste Winterruhe in dieser Höhle verbracht haben, war es sehr praktisch mit diesem Magnetsystem hin und wieder mal einen Blick hineinzuwerfen, um völlig unkompliziert mal nach dem Zustand der Tiere zu sehen.
