good de-icer for central texas above-ground fish pond
I ordered this the day before we were expecting a hard 3-day freeze. My 800-gallon above-ground fish pond ices over easily, so this was one of those last moment orders. It’s not a water heater but it did keep the ice from forming around it and my teenage goldfish loved it! During the freeze they huddled up under it and would frequently swim about the pond in the very cold water. Usually they just paddle in place, not robustly swim about. So far as de-icing, it worked great. The surface of the pond has thin ice, but the area around the de-icer was ice free. This unit has a nice 15-ft electrical cord, but I used it with an outdoor heavy-duty extension cord and an outdoor waterproof extension protector that snaps tightly around the fittings. Works like a charm, and I don’t have to worry about blowing rain or ice causing a shortI do not like the shape and it’s light gray color. It floats on top of the water and looks like a ginormous gray tick. (I kid you not.) I have no other description for it except that if you squint your eyes, it might look like an ugly piece of floating gray plastic. But, hey, it works, so no point taken off.I gave 5 stars for overall, easy to use, and easy to install, and 4 stars for value for the money. The latter is because it runs up the electric bill at 300 watts. That’s a bit extra on the electric bill for 72 hours straight (or longer), but compared to other de-icers, this is considered low wattage. One side note: I didn’t allow my unit to float about freely, which it will if not secured. I secured my de-icer between two rock outcroppings so it wouldn’t float around. IDK if it’s designed to be a “moving” de-icer, but i made it stationary so the goldfish could huddle beneath it. They seemed to like that.If you’re looking for an affordable de-icer with reasonable wattage, I recommend this unit. Some people use a temperature sensing cube Thermacube, but I prefer to disconnect the power cord when not in use.

Kept my pond surface from freezing completely
I have a small round pond, about 8′ diameter and 2 feet deep. I also have a waterfall to keep the water moving. Our winter temperatures got below freezing several times last winter. Any time it was going to stay below freezing for more than a day I put this on my pond. It worked great keeping a hole about 2′ in diameter even when the temperature stayed below freezing for over a week and it snowed a few inches. The portion of the pond surface that did freeze did not have thick ice. The fish and resident frog as well as my plants survived the cold and I will be using it again this winter! This does not keep the water warm, it just keeps a hole in the ice for air circulation.

    works great!
i purchased this heater 6 years ago. it’s STILL GOING STRONG! i only put it in the pond when the water is going to freeze,so it doesn’t stay in the water all winter. i’m very impressed with it in this Colorado mountain weather. i’ll purchase another for sure when mine kicks the bucket.

    Great Value!
This little heater rock is a great value, doing its job in the harsh Minnesota winters without pulling large amounts of electricity. We use this rock heater to keep a hole open on our pond throughout the winter to release the gas that would be trapped by the ice. The rock works great keeping a small area open throughout the winter, when it gets really cold (negative temperatures) the heater can’t keep up and will freeze into the ice but when it warms back up it breaks free again, because the top is not heated it will create a little crave for it’s self in the snow, which works well. The plastic top isn’t the best and we have gotten water in it before which affects the buoyance, which then we just replace the unit due to the low cost, which is why this heater gets a 4/5 stars. For the value of this rock heater you can’t go wrong.

YIKES. Buy and risk your fish
There should be a zero stars option. The warmer killed my fish twice. The device has a thermostat or similar element that does not work well. It shocked and killed my fish the first time it failed. I asked for my money back. They said I “missed” the warmer. The mfr sent a replacement and it stopped working, the water froze, and the fish suffocated. I contacted customer serve and asked for my money back. I was told that the replacement unit I was sent and used within 6 month was OUT OF WARRANTY and Soectrum would not not refund my money until I shipped the unit back to them AT MY EXPENSE so they could test this second failed unit then SPECTRUM would decide if a refund was to be made. YIKES! And Spectrum is a US company.

    Tetra makes great pond products
I was ready to return this pond de icer due to poor reviews. Two people wrote it electrocuted their fish. I decided to go online and check for the best pond de icer heater. This one was number two. The first was for livestock. So I’m keeping this one. I very much doubt it will kill my fish since I have used tetra products since 1990.

Fabulous for small pond, but only lasted one season
My pond is about 5 foot around and 3 foot deep with a waterfall over the top. I only wanted to keep the pond part unfrozen with my goldfish… It did fantastic in -17 ° weather in Kansas and the fish seemed to be fine and survived. I’m confident that if I chose to dig my pond out a little wider that it would continue great.Update… After only one winter I have to throw away. The underneath of the float began to rust terribly and fall apart and for some reason started to take on water. It lasted for a total of maybe 4 months. I guess $10 a month to keep my fish was worth it, but will be finding a different option for next winter.

    Not effective below -5 Fahrenheit.
The pond heater works well until temperatures go below zero Fahrenheit. It is not effective to -20F but does maintain a small opening to -20C. It looks good and long cord is very useful.

This system does keep my pond free of ice (small area of 3 feet square) during the Canadian winter of the Atlantic Province (encounter – 20 Celsius in January and February). This allow the gas build up to escape. I have not lost any Koi fishes for the past two winter. It works well and I am very satisfy. As for power bill, well it did not increase much, $10.00 CAN for two months payment for continuous operation days and nights as the temperature drop below -5 Celsius. Above it, the ground temperature keep the pond ice free therefore no need to have it turn on.

This is the second pond heater I’ve had like this, I like it because it keeps the water open for the winter. It only comes on when the ice hits it. My old one has lasted more than 5 years and it is still going strong. We got this one new, and will use the old one as a backup.

Newest Update, January 2025After contacting the supplier, and providing a few details regarding my defective de-icer, they sent me a replacement. I received the de-icer in record time and thankfully before the temperature dropped to -22C. Although I was initially disappointed with the de-icer, I felt that I had to say that the service I received from this company was excellent! I would definitely buy again. Thank you.Update: This de-iced worked well at first, but has now filled with water and is blowing my circuit breaker. I am so disappointed, as I have followed the manufacturer’s instructions, have stored it inside when not in use and have never dropped or mistreated it!
