Nashville Couple Rescues Dog Chained to a Moving Car, Launching Animal Cruelty Investigation
What began as a peaceful Sunday morning in a quiet Nashville neighborhood turned into a heartbreaking discovery when a couple encountered a young dog dragging an eight-foot rusty chain down the street. Shelby and Adison Harvat were walking near their home on Skyridge Drive when they spotted the frightened animal struggling to move, his tail tucked tightly between his legs. Unsure of where he had come from, they and their neighbors began searching for answers, only to uncover something horrifying on local security footage.
The video, captured around 9:30 a.m., showed a silver Nissan Altima driving repeatedly through the neighborhood with the dog chained to the back of the car. Multiple cameras recorded the terrified animal running to keep up as the vehicle moved along the road. Eventually, the chain snapped, setting him free and allowing the Harvats to intervene.
“It blows my mind that somebody would be just openly in the middle of a Sunday doing that around the neighborhood,” Adison Harvat said. When they first approached the dog, he was trembling, refusing to eat, drink, or even move. His fear was evident, and his body language told a story of deep trauma.
The couple immediately brought him inside their home, offering comfort and safety while they contacted Metro Animal Care and Control (MACC). By the next morning, officers arrived to take the dog into protective custody and open an official animal cruelty investigation. Fortunately, despite the terrifying ordeal, veterinarians confirmed the dog had not sustained any physical injuries.

A family in Seattle dropped their dog, a black lab named Mitch, off at a local kennel one day, not expecting anything unusual to occur. But Mitch’s stay at the kennel ended with an employee brutally kicking and punching him – to the point of death.
“It’s terrible how anyone could do that to an animal. And this dog is the sweetest thing ever,” said Shelby Harvat. “How could you ever do that and just chain him up behind a car?”
In the hours that followed, the couple witnessed an extraordinary change. The once-fearful dog began to show signs of trust and affection. “He instantly got excited that we were downstairs,” Adison shared. “He’s going in between your legs, his tail’s wagging, and he did a full 180 within one day.” Their compassion and patience gave the frightened pup the reassurance he needed to begin healing.
The Harvats now hope investigators can identify the vehicle and the person responsible. They believe justice is crucial, not only for the dog they saved but for all animals subjected to neglect or abuse. “Don’t just jump into getting a dog if you can’t take care of them,” Adison said. “They deserve to be treated the same way that we all do.”

For now, the rescued dog remains in the care of Metro Animal Care and Control as the investigation continues. Once cleared for adoption, Shelby and Adison plan to help him find a family who will give him the love, safety, and respect every dog deserves.
This heartbreaking yet hopeful story is a powerful reminder of how a single act of compassion can change the course of a life. Thanks to the Harvats’ quick thinking and kindness, one innocent dog is finally safe, and his future looks far brighter than his past.
