Very good filter for small tanks!
I used this little filter in my “clinic” tank. I have treated 3 balloon platys in a gal of water and it worked perfectly. It filtered the water and at the same time it produced a good amount of air.I treated my fish by dipping them in Methylene Blue before I dropped them in the clinic tank. The filter got stained but it did not affect performance. One thing to note is that it doesn’t come with the pump and air line. You will have to have those separately. It does come with suction cup so you can stick it to the wall and it holds it in place really well. This filter really works and since my platys have now recovered, I’m putting the clinic tank away with the filters until I need it again (knock, knock). It’s very reasonably priced and it is very functional. I’m so happy to have this in my clinic tank!

    Great little sponge filter
I just got into fishkeeping as a hobby. This filter is placed in my tank where I quarantine small plants it’s pretty quiet and functions. Well, my sponge is starting to get color to it which means it’s working very well built larger than I thought it was gonna be but I’m OK with that. A small amount of bubbles come out so seems like it would be great for sensitive fish. Seems like it’s well-made and sturdy. Very easy to assemble comes ready to use and I just put it on the end of my air hose and it seals well. Great filter and I will be buying more for my other fish tanks

It works but no replacement parts available
I’ve had this for a month now, and it works pretty well. I knocked off a star because you can’t get replacement sponges for the one I bought.

Perfect for my mini 1 gallon tank
It’s still a bit early since I just hooked it all up today, but so far I love this! I have it in my 1 gallon tank hooked up to a 1W air pump and it’s the perfect size to sit in the back corner of the tank nicely. It does try to float a little bit even once the initial air pockets are released, but it’s not hard to weigh down at all and slight pressure from one of my suction cupped tank decorations is plenty efficient to keep it in place. I love the smaller bubbles it produces for aeration and water movement. If using for a smaller tank like mine, I do highly recommend getting a check valve and air flow valve to make sure you can adjust the power of the air flow accordingly (air pump and tubing NOT included!). If I didn’t then it definitely would have been a bit too powerful for my size of tank, but dialed down it’s absolutely perfect. Highly recommend!

    Waste of time and money
Bought this for a 5 gallon tank that didn’t get filled all the way so around 4 gallons water. It’s pointless!!! I started cleaning it out every day and it still couldn’t keep the tank clean and there’s only 1 fish. I upgraded to a different 5 gallen tank with a built in filter that actually works and use this mostly for air bubbles now since my fish liked swimming in them. So air bubbles 5 stars. Working as an actual filter, 0 stars!

Perfect for my 2.5 gallon tank – no big current – fish playing in bubbles!
I just installed this filter and aerator combo in my small 2.5 gallon TopFin corner aquarium. The filter that came with it didn’t last more than 3 months. I set this up in just minutes, at first I thought the bubbles were so big and worried the current would they’d swirl my small fish around the tank. NOT SO! As you can see in my video, the fish are no larger than 1 1/2 “ in length, small, one in particular. They was no problem with it pushing them around, so I’m relieved I don’t have to find a way to adjust it. The water turned crystal clear and they were able to eat… …. so this item creates a nice flow in the water but nothing to worry about. I came back 2 hours later, two of the fish were swimming in and out of the bubble stream, playing in it. That sealed the deal for me! They’re happy, and I ordered a second one today for my Betta tank. Planning to use filter floss when it comes time to change the sponge, to see how well it works as an alternative to constantly buying sponges. If any big changes I’ll update this review.. It is also really aesthetically pleasing, and I’m happy that it doesn’t have to be clipped to hang at the top of the tank like an eyesore, as most filters. Praying it holds up well. When it comes time to wash/replace the beads inside, I plan to use either small bio beads or zeolite crystals which are being used as my gravel.. (TIP: YOU CANNOT ADD ANY SALT IN YOUR TANK IF YOU USE ZEOLITE BECAUSE SALT WILL CAUSE THE ZEOLITE TO RELEASE ALL THE NITRATES THEY ABSORBED BACK INTO THE WATER.)(Note: the actual pump, and air hose tubing, you do have to buy separately to attach to this filter/aerator. The pump I bought on Amazon. is small, blue, sits behind the tank, and for small tanks up to 10 gallons.)

I think it helps with beneficial bacteria growth
I bought 2 of these, the smaller one for a 10 gallon and now the larger I will have in my 29 gallon. I like that it increases area for beneficial bacteria, and that it doesn’t have activated carbon, just the media and sponge. It’s super easy to clean and instead of buying the filters which are a little spendy for what you get, I just replace them with polyfill which is super cheap. It doesn’t come with the tubing or pump, but for this price I would think that would be obvious. I do have mine partially covered by substrate because it doesn’t really remove much of the bioload (fish waste and decaying plant matter) of the tank, just houses more of the ammonia and nitrite eating bacteria, and provides some aeration.

This is regarding the UPETTOOLS Mini Aquarium Sponge Filter, Small Fish Tank Filter Submersible Fish Filter Built-in Air Bubble Stone and Bio Balls for Fish Tanks up to 5 Gallon (Air Pump Not Included).I’m making a small water feature for in my living room and I wanted to add a bubbler stone to it, but I didn’t have a good filtration system in place yet. This is a great solution as space is limited and I wanted to keep this as low maintance as possible. The set up is simple, but due to its small size, positioning can be tricky.Very discrete and easy to hide.I’m not sure exactly how much water it could actually service if fish were involved. This is a good purchase at this price point.

I chose this air-filter to use in my 5 gallon aquarium in order to keep the water ammonia-free with beneficial bacteria while providing a very light current.I forgot to rinse it before placing it into my tank, and my betta fish didn’t die. I did do several partial water changes afterwards though. She lived without any current or filter for a year before this, and has adjusted quite well to the low-flow.However, like other commenters have noted, I cannot seem to find replacement sponges for this. So when the time comes I’ll probably switch to a different sponge filter.

I have a little 5 gallon tank, with a little betta, and had a HUGE filter that took up way too much space- and the suction was too strong for him (and my live plants). I also hate buying the ready made filters with the plastic pieces that just get thrown away. It’s bad for the environment. This little bubble filter solved all of that. It’s takes up very little room in my tank, I can add my own filter media, and thanks to the splitter I have on my pump- I can have it eject a small enough stream of bubbles that doesn’t disturb my fish or my plants. In fact if you look close enough in the pic, you can see my betta swimming around this. The lighting isn’t good enough to see the bubbles- led colored- and the output is low, but it puts out a steady stream of tiny bubbles. My betta isn’t stressed now, and I’m not picking plant pieces out of my filter.

Purchased October 7, 2024 worked great. Larger footprint than I expected. On December 19, 2024 started spouting rather than bubbling. Two of my three guppies were caught in the current and thrown out of the tank. Very stressful. I was cleaning the filter weekly and had made replacement filters. There is a dense more solid filter on the spout (the bubbler perhaps) that I think got clogged, this may have been the problem. My tank is very clean and clear with this filter. I am currently buying two of these filters and swapping them so I can clean both filters thoroughly before using. I am swapping them out every two months. Especially before I travel.

It didn’t take long before it needed the filter materials replaced only to discover there are none available. So basically this is a disposable item. I have replaced it with a filter that does have replacement filters. My advice, stay away from this product completely.
