Homemade dog food might seem intimidating—but it doesn’t have to be. I’m here to show you how easy and rewarding it can be.
My name is Max, and my passion for feeding animals well started when I was just a kid visiting my grandma on her farm. I helped her care for the dogs, and I still remember watching her prepare their meals with the same love and care she gave to everyone else in the family. Those early experiences shaped my belief that our dogs deserve real, nourishing food made with intention.
As I got older, that belief only grew stronger. I combined my love of cooking with a deep concern for what goes into commercial pet food—and what’s often left out. Through research, trial and error, and expert guidance, I discovered just how transformative homemade food can be for a dog’s health, energy, digestion, and overall happiness.
This book brings together everything I’ve learned over the years, all in one easy-to-use, supportive guide. It’s packed with practical advice, step-by-step instructions, and plenty of recipes that you and your dog will both feel great about.
Join thousands of other dog lovers who’ve taken the leap to homemade feeding—and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing exactly what’s in your dog’s bowl!

Helpful Guide
This book is a helpful and simple guide for anyone who wants to prepare homemade meals for their dog. I picked it up because I wanted more control over what my dog eats and was concerned about the ingredients in commercial dog food. The book helped me understand the basics of canine nutrition in a very clear way. It explains what dogs need to stay healthy and offers a variety of easy-to-follow recipes.I appreciated how beginner-friendly the instructions are. Even though Iâm not great in the kitchen, I found the meals easy to make. Since using this book, I feel better knowing exactly what my dog is eating. My dog seems happier and healthier, and mealtime is more enjoyable for both of us.

You never think about dog nutrition when you buy their food
Most consumers buy pet food and assume it is a well balanced diet for your pet. A few will go to specialty brands or formulas to control health issues on the advice of your vet.The book educates the reader about home made dog food and how to introduce and condition your pet to transition from commercial brands to a home cooked diet with a clear understanding of pet nutritional needs.I learned about the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO). They are an independent organization that has been guiding state, federal and international feed regulators with ingredient definitions, label standards and laboratory standards for more than 110 years. They even have standards for dogs to help you! There is a ton of helpful information and training before you ever get to the recipes with a section for special needs et with issues like allergies, digestive issues or overweight concerns to name a few.If this is an act of love you want to give your beloved dog, this is a fine place to start.

The recipes are simple
Didnât think iâd ever be mixing up salmon bowls and eggshell powder for a dog but here we are and the breakdown on what dogs actually need nutritionally made me realize iâve been winging it for years had no clue how important stuff like calcium and magnesium were and the section that walks you through allergies weight issues and food prep safety felt way more useful than i expected and now iâm lowkey obsessed with checking ingredient labels for anything sketchy and the recipe part’s chill not overly fancy and i’ve already done that chicken stew with sweet potato a few times cause my dog scarfs it down like itâs thanksgiving

Not just recipes
If you’re looking for a homemade dog food book that goes beyond the basics, this is a great pick. What I appreciated wasn’t just the recipes (which are clear and practical), but the thorough explanation of canine nutrition, the why behind the homemade. The author does a great job of breaking down what dogs really need in their diet, how to source ingredients, and how to adapt meals for different health needs. It’s a thoughtful, well-rounded guide that empowers you to feed your dog better, not just copy a few meals.

Real food for a happier pup
Homemade Dog Food Cookbook makes home-cooking for your pup feel totally doableânot overwhelming at all. The recipes are simple, and the ingredients are easy to find, which is a huge plus. One thing that really stood out to me was the section on balancing nutrients, especially how to include calcium and the right fats in your dogâs meals. I never realized how important things like ground eggshells or fish oil could be for their bones and coat. I plan to try out the chicken and sweet potato recipe, since itâs packed with nutrients and something I know my dogs will love.

Cooking for Your Best Friend
I didnât expect to find a book on dog food interesting, but here we are. Homemade Dog Food Cookbook makes a simple but eye-opening point: dogs arenât little people. Their bodies arenât like ours, their diets shouldnât be like ours, and the way we feed themâmost of the timeâisnât really based on whatâs best for them. Itâs based on whatâs easy for us. This book doesnât try to shame you into becoming your dogâs personal chef, but it does open up the possibility. If you do want to go all in, it gives you everything you need. But even if you donât, youâll learn a lotâand you might find yourself trying one of the recipes every now and then. Not because you have to. Just because it feels good to give something real to the creature who asks for so little and loves you no matter what.

This book has been such a big help for me and my dog. Iâd never tried making homemade meals before, but the instructions were clear and easy to follow, which made the whole process simple and enjoyable.I loved learning how to choose the right ingredients and make meals that actually support my dogâs health. Since switching to these recipes, Iâve noticed a real differenceâmy dog has more energy, a healthier coat, and just seems happier overall. It gave me the confidence to take control of my dogâs nutrition, and Iâm so glad I found it. A really practical and reassuring book for any dog owner.

When my 12-year-old Labrador started struggling with arthritis and food sensitivities over the last little while, our vet suggested homemade meals. Max Barnes’ cookbook became my go-to for balancing nutrition without overwhelm. The slow-cooker chicken stew, a mix of shredded chicken, sweet potatoes, and green beans, quickly became her favorite. Itâs straightforward to prepare, and I appreciate the flexibility to swap ingredients based on what is seasonal or on sale. The turmeric-infused salmon bowls stood out for their anti-inflammatory benefits. Within about four weeks, I noticed her moving more comfortably during walks. Barnes explains the purpose of each ingredient, which helped me adjust recipes when she experienced minor digestive hiccups. While sourcing supplements like kelp powder took some effort, the shopping lists and portion charts simplified the process. This is not a quick fix, it requires commitment, but seeing her energy and coat improve has been rewarding. If you are considering homemade dog food, this book offers a solid, no-nonsense starting point.

I appreciate this book a lot, written by someone with experience and clearly a love for dogs from he was a child. Looking at the vibrant images in the book it is clear that good nutrition is at the heart of this book â something that manâs best friend deserves. I especially love the fact that the author has included foods that are harmful to dogs (eg chocolate which can cause diarrhoea, increased heart rate and even death) for some of us often forget that they are dogs, not humans. Some of the recommended foods carry a high price tag (duck, quinoa, sardines, salmon, blueberries) but hey, if you can afford it, why not?

I am sure the author has good intentions however this is titled and marketed as a dog food cookbook but the recipes donât start until well over half the book or around page 130 or so (kindle version). I was very disappointed with the amount of fluff or info that wasnât super important found at the beginning. Had to get pretty deep into the book before finding recipes and then they were just ok with hardly any recipe pictures.
