Surgery isn’t the only way forward—know your options, and make the choice that’s right for your dog.

When Jennifer Carter’s energetic dog, Luce, suffered a devastating CCL and meniscus tear, the response from many vets was swift and absolute: surgery or else. But Jennifer, a certified canine nutritionist, knew there had to be another way—and she was determined to find it.

The Unplanned Obstacle is both an emotional journey and a powerful guidebook. In these pages, Jennifer shares how she, alongside a team of compassionate veterinary professionals, helped Luce achieve a full recovery through conservative management—a non-surgical, holistic approach to healing that emphasizes time, patience, targeted therapies, and nutrition.

Whether you’re knee-deep in internet research or sitting shell-shocked after a vet visit, this book is here to calm the chaos and give you a roadmap. You’ll gain not just hope, but a clear, experience-backed understanding of how to move forward with confidence and love.

A must read for any dog parent
I was so taken by this book that I finished it in a week. The story of Jen and Luce beautifully captures the emotional turmoil pet owners face when making tough medical decisions for their companions. As a veterinarian, I was impressed by how the author blended a personal journey with a clear, accurate explanation of the science and different treatment options. It’s a great read that I’d recommend to any veterinary professional or pet parent.

    Another path to healing.
As an integrative veterinarian I know that there are often more than 1 or 2 care options for an injured or ill pet. In this book, Jennifer Carter offers a wealth of information about alternative care options for CCL injuries. This information can also be applied to many other problems. She emphasizes the importance of diet in health and recovery, and the need for help by a team of veterinarians, and other professional health care providers, in tailoring a specific plan for the patient. She also addresses the importance of mental health care for a dog who has moved from normal activity to restricted activity, and addresses the stress this can put on the dog’s family. Jennifer Carter’s strong relationship with Luce, firm advocacy for her care, and kind patience were the keys to such a great recovery. It’s a most helpful book. Well done.

    Canine Rehab Practitioner Approved
If you are in a situation where your dog has a partially or completely torn cranial cruciate ligament and aren’t sure whether your next step should be surgery or conservative management, this book is pure gold.If you are a canine rehab practitioner or therapist wanting more information regarding conservative management of a CCL tear, this book is pure gold.If you are a dog owner that just wants to be prepared before your dog is injured, this book is pure gold.I think you get the idea. This book is loaded with lots of good information from Jennifer’s first hand experience rehabbing her incredible dog, Luce. Most of the time when you hear “CCL tear” you are often directed toward surgery, however, just know there is another way and with extreme dedication, it may be what’s best for your dog.I am a canine rehabilitation practitioner and I found this book incredibly valuable as it has given me the other perspective. I see quite a few post-op TPLOs (corrective surgery for CCL tears), but I’m better armed with knowledge from the other side.
