Belle Darris –
A comprehensive book for Dog Breeders
I have many books on dog breeding on my shelves. This one is different in several ways. It is written in textbook fashion with a FAQ section at the front of and a “Test your understanding” quiz at the end of each chapter. It uses color photographs to show you what the author is talking about when describing specific conditions or situations. It is written in laymans language making it easy to understand and yet it is comprehensive enough for the long time breeder to learn something new.The author has the educational and practical credentials required to write this type of book and uses a style of writing that’s easy to read without being condescending. In my opinion this book is a must have for any dog breeder and I strongly recommend it.

Informative & Helpful – very detailed
This is a great resource for anyone breeding and rearing dogs. I used it constantly throughout gestation and even during delivery of my Standard Poodle puppies. It is detailed and informative like a textbook, and some of the material was over my head, but overall I found the info invaluable and will continue to study the items I do not understand and learn more about those topics. I would definitely, 100% recommend this to anyone who is even considering breeding. It covers everything from nutrition for the female preparing for breeding to post-whelp and beyond. Worth every penny!

Good clinical text to accompany MOOC course
Detailed clinical volume best used when accompanied By Coursera MOOC by Dr. Margaret V. Root Kushtriz where the vet provides detailed illustration of the subject matter.

Outdated but thorough
This book is very comprehensive – but crosses the line into being too comprehensive. It touches on more topics than make sense to be in a single book on canine reproduction. In addition, I did find that more recent findings from the veterinary literature are not reflected in here – if you are someone that follows recent publications, you will find a stark contrast in recommendations in this book versus recommendations drawn based on more updated research. For that reason while the book is not NOT worth reading, I got the feeling that should probably double-check data and recommendations presented in this book (especially by checking against anything published since, say, the 90s) and for that reason, it shan’t earn a place on my shelf as my one-stop-shop for canine reproduction knowledge.

Awesome Reference
well written, accurate, current, and very well referenced. This book should be required reading for every breeder. It was a great review and quick learning tool for myself as a veterinarian.

This book is a “must have” for novice as well as experienced dog breeders. The pictures are outstanding and the best I have ever seen in a book on the topic of dog breeding. Parts of the book are more technical than usual, but overall it is a great help in breeding as well as health management issues.
