Seems to work as well as is needed for pools, and really handy.
Iâve only had this for a few days. I see the reason that some people have complained about the accuracy. Testing among several samples; salt pool water, tap water, and mixed half-n-half, shows that the same sample can show variation of up to 200 ppm. The higher the salt content the more variation in the readings. The tap water showed readings between 175 and 210. The pool water showed a highest reading of 3350 and a lowest of 3150. Each reading was taken after the meter was immersed swirled and held for 20 seconds. Holding longer didnât result in any change.I suspect the display locks onto a reading after a few seconds unless it really changes. Iâve used some cheap multiple meters that just showed the instant voltage and they were unreadable because the numbers never stopped changing so there has to be some kind of time average function in the display. This one seems to use a longer time average the longer itâs immersed. If you are using this for some kind of bio-chemistry work, it likely might lack the accuracy you need. For pools, the salt range has to be between 2700 and 3500 ppm for most systems. Iâve always relied on the salt display on my salt gen controller and itâs usually pretty accurate (as far as I know). But as the catalyst cell wears out the readings become a little more unreliable. I bought this as a quick double check. From what I know the only other option for testing salt levels is a refractometer. From what Iâve read, those really are best for seawater level salt. Salt pools are about 1/10 the salinity of seawater. Refractometers range from 0 to 50 ppt (parts per thousand). So pool water is about 2.7 to 3.5 on that scale. It would be easy to have an error of +- 3 on that scale which would make it useless for a pool. These seem to be the best option, and this unit seems as accurate as you would expect from a tester that cost less than $100. Heck Iâve spent more than that on an inflatable that the kids punched a hole in the first day we inflated it.Iâve tried using salt test strips and they border on useless for me. Itâs easier to read an old mercury thermometer than those test strips. I think this unit works fine for what I need it for. If itâs off by 100-200ppm from actual, it really doesnât matter. Itâs fast and really easy to read. I hope it lasts a few seasons, but since itâs for a pool, Iâll be happy to get 3-5 years out of it.

Accurate Saltwater Pool Tester
Finally opening the pool again, so we were able to get this saltwater pool gouge out to try it out, and we were happy with the results. It is easier than I thought it would be, and pretty intuitive, really. Our salt system is always showing that salt is low, which is not always the case as we have it tested at the local pool store, and it’s only ever needed salt a handful of times. Its nice to have this gauge to measure and not have to schlep to the pool store every other weekend, just take the water to be tested when we have to actually pick something up there. It is pretty big, though, so I didn’t understand why, and it takes up more than it’s fair share of shed space, but it is really good to have. We’re pleased with it for the most part, and glad we got it.

Accurate but very large device
Right out of the box I took a measurement with this device and compared it to two separate measurements I made using salt strips, and it read within about 200 ppm of those strips, so from a relative accuracy perspective thatâs pretty good because most salt measuring is not that precise to begin with. Display is very large and easy to read. Pretty intuitive, really didnât need to even read the operating instructions to be able to accurately use it.I think the only drawback to this, is the size. It is very large, so Iâm not exactly sure where Iâm gonna store it when Iâm not using it, because you can easily break devices like this, so you need to put it somewhere where itâs not gonna get beat up.Does what its designed to do, so as long as you have somewhere to safely store it should satisfy most folks need.

EASY TO USE!
It is so much easier to put this thing in the water and seconds later have an accurate reading that is digital. No more guessing what color the tiny square is! I love it!

No more bending over
This salt tester has a long probe that lets you use it without getting down on your knees as you test the water. The probe also has LEDs along the length that shows the approximate reading while the screen shows the exact amount of salt. I deducted one star because the âideal rangeâ doesnât correspond with the ideal range for my Hot Spring hot tub salt water system.

Very convenient long reach tester
For some reason salinity measured by my Jandy AquaPure controller, and one reported by our local pool shop, are always different. This device shows the measurement right in the middle, which means that it should be about right. Unlike the small devices, this one has a long arm, so you can measure salinity not only at the surface, but a couple feet deep (although in my case it appears to be the same). Overall, it’s a great addition to my pool lab.
