It takes more than horse sense to maintain a healthy horse. A knowledge of veterinary medicine is essential, not only for when emergencies occur but to provide the animal with a safe and nurturing environment that will prevent as many problems as possible.

Acclaimed when first published in 1977 and now available for the first time in paperback, Horseman’s Veterinary Encyclopedia offers a comprehensive approach to equine health, discussing diseases, unsoundnesses and other problems according to the parts of the horse’s body: injuries and lameness; foot and hoof care; parasites; skin and coat care; colic and other sicknesses; dental care; and the respiratory, circulatory and reproductive systems.

As a practical handbook for the owner and as a guide to working with the veterinarian and farrier, Horseman’s Veterinary Encyclopedia is an indispensable tool for every home, barn, and ranch.

The highly acclaimed reference on equine medical treatment and preventive care.

The Perfect Audience The book “Horseman’s Veterinary Encyclopedia
I recently purchased the “Horseman’s Veterinary Encyclopedia, Revised and Updated,” for personal use. I was thoroughly impressed with the product, and the service provided by Amazon as noted in this review linked below. This book was entertaining, insightful, and delivered in a timely matter. I truly appreciate the product Amazon have provided me with at a fair price. I am judging this product on its information, and the accuracy of the product description. The Perfect AudienceThe book “Horseman’s Veterinary Encyclopedia, Revised and Updated,” offers some great information. It gives a quick overview of different ailments or diseases that horse owners might encounter. This book would be an excellent start for any new owner with minimal to some horse background. There is some jargon included that would only be understood with some background on horse anatomy, but gives a great detailed explanation on each page.Product DetailsEach disease is described moderately well. It comes with a description of what it is, what to look for, and how to possibly treat or avoid the disease. This keeps medical terms simple without demoting you or any reader by stating information that should already be known. The text doesn’t drag on about different topics like most anatomy textbooks do; it was quick and to the point. This book looks intimidating from the cover, which can be seen above, but once the reader flips through a couple of pages, one can see that the author has laid out diagrams and pictures for quick referencing. Anatomical pictures included allows for anyone with less equine background to get a better idea of the concept, as seen to the left. The description on Amazon does not, cover the level of the information in the book which could mislead buyers. The Amazon description does, however, include a short note of what is covered to promote consumer confidence.RatingOverall, I would rate this product a 5 out of 5 stars. It provides helpful information in a quick manner. Amazon did a wonderful job providing a valuable resource to horse owners and equine students alike. I would suggest this to any horse owner that would like to have a helpful reference around the barn.

    Great for future equine vets
I got this for my friend who will be starting vet school in the fall, and she loved it! She’s the horse expert though, not me so I can’t comment on the quality of the information within it.

    My wife loved it
It came in the day after Mother’s Day, but my wife still loved it. I’d been wanting to get this for her for a while. It is very well put together. We’ve lent other horse books of ours out to our friends, only to wait a while to get them back, she said this one isn’t going anywhere.

    Revised? Updated?
I am a horse owner, have been for years, and I thought that this would be a great reference book. However, it seems that whenever I need to do research on something specific, the information is either not in the book, contrary to what my vet has said, or just isn’t helpful. Look up “cribbing”- a passing mention of “cording of the neck muscles that results when he forces air into his stomach.” Period. No possible causation, no mention of diet, suggestions to alleviate, the latest research, nothing. Look up “Deworming”- you get photos of the nasty critters that may inhabit your horses digestive system, and some suggestions about how to handle them. I was looking for information on the latest info on ivermectin resistance, rotation schedules, etc., and that wasn’t there. I also couldn’t find a chart of the entire skeletal system. There are drawings and photos of all sorts of conditions and pieces/parts of anatomy that may be helpful at some point, but so far, this book is rather disappointing.
