Why do you need UVB Reptile Light for illumination?

World’s great in reed frog enclosure!
This replaced a CF UVB bulb and this gives a consistent spectrum that the plants (and reed frogs) in the terrarium really respond to. I keep it on a sunrise/sunset schedule that reflects the actual sunrise/sunset to keep it tuned to the the plants’ and frogs’ needs. It fits perfectly inside the black dome light fixture that sits atop the enclosure.

Check with a solarmeter first!
With UVB bulbs, it is difficult without a solarmeter to determine whether or not sufficient UVB is being supplied to your reptile companions. After all, UVB is not visible to the human eye, so just because this light bulb provides a nice white light doesn’t mean that it is supplying the UVB levels that the manufacturer claims it does. In fact, with the bulb that I received, it did not even supply enough UV to register at an 18″ height. It barely registers UVI 2.0 at 4″ from the bulb. It does provide a very nice light for the terrarium, and I probably just received a lemon, but if your reptile is one that requires a UVB light to stay healthy (our isn’t), it would be advisable to actually use a solarmeter to make sure the bulb is supplying what your companion needs.

Great lights!
These put out more light and are great for my mourning geckos! I like to run them for about an hour before my plant lights come on as a sunrise effect.

Very nice, clean light.
I am still personally not at a point where I trust the LED bulbs for full desert UVB. I know that it will eventually get there (this already happened before with coral reef tanks and LEDs) but for now, I am using it on tropical level, and I love it. It gives off UVB (registers on a card) and my gecko isn’t in need of heavy UVB (gargoyle) so I’m not concerned. The color coming off of this is great. Perfect for photos. This is a good light, but a little pricey for an LED bulb. Other than that, I like it!

Does what it needs
This tiny bulb has been at work in my little croc skinks enclosure for a couple months now and itâs still going strong. I do have it on a timer everyday and it hasnât went out!
