Strontium occurs in natural seawater at a concentration of about 8 to 10 mg/L. It is chemically very similar to calcium, and many organisms incorporate it in their skeletons along with calcium. Its addition to reef aquariums aids the growth of corals, coralline algae and other organisms that lay down a calcereous skeleton or shell, including tridacnid clams. The first and only 10 minute strontium test! The test involves separation of strontium from the sample by a highly selective extraction technique, followed by a sensitive titration in 0.5 mg/L increments. The sample is treated and filtered through an adsorbent to selectively remove the strontium from solution. The filtrate is discarded and the adsorbent is washed to remove residual sample. The strontium is then eluted from the adsorbent and measured.

Too complicated. Plus anything that comes with rubber gloves, a cheap protective eye shield and causes burns I’ll pass..
Don’t know yet? The test kit has so many steps, complicated directions and a plethora of reagents with rubber gloves and plastic glasses. It looks very intimidating and dangerous to me. I’m going to stick to the Salifert until I’m really bored and have nothing better to do. I guess I should return it. This is an edit 4 months later! It’s still in my kitchen cabinet. I’m afraid to throw it out cause I might accidentally poison some innocent child or adult!! More money tossed out the window!! I took plenty of chemistry in Pharmacy school and got straight A’s but I’d rather read an Organic chemistry book than to attempt this one. I wonder where the skull and crossbones are located on box?I’ll try it why not. It’s easier just to throw in a smidgeon of strontium or yes a water change!! and use the Salifert! If I get really bored I’ll do it and give you guys some feedback. in the meantime put more time into to important things like phosphates, nitrates, salinity, calcium, magnesium, alkalinity, ph,

Difficult to use
It works, but it is a LOT of work.

Complicated test that will never give you accurate results
Over the past couple of months, I’ve purchased and evaluated most of the hobbyist-level marine test kits from Red Sea, Salifert, Elos, Hanna, Nyos, SeaChem, Giesemann, Lamotte, and Hach, and then compared them to results from simultaneous water samples sent to Triton Labs for spectroscopy. So – There are only a couple of test kits for strontium on the market. Both of them are worthless. Even when performed correctly and repeatedly, both this test and the one from Salifert will give you low or even 0 readings, even if your strontium is at toxic high levels. At least the Salifert test is reasonably straightforward. This kit from SeaChem certainly isn’t as difficult to use as some reviews would suggest, but it is a lengthy process, and involves lab procedures like elution that you don’t usually find in hobbyist level tests. The elution is done with a sad little column made from a syringe; I doubt it functions as intended.

seachem strontium
I have tried this test many times and unable to get it to work correctly Im very sad to give Seachem this rating because I’m a huge fan their products and use almost all they offer for my fresh and reef aquarium. I suppose I could of sent it back and asked for a refund and or new kit but I kept trying to make it work.

Thank you

WASTE OF MONEY. EXPIRED Strontium 4 Reagent.
The reference test kit is not working. Strontium #4 Reagent is not effective. The year label on the case says 2015 and it’s already 2019. And worst of all, it is not eligible for return! Total waste of money!
