Works great for my needs
Bought this for a smallish, shallow bird bath to keep water from freezing during winter. The bird bath was on a covered deck so the heating unit was not exposed to rain, snow, etc. Worked great for what I needed (small size) although I recognize itâs really for aquariums.

Easy setup and spot-on temperature control.
We have just recently re-done our 10 gallon aquarium tank. I spent some time looking for a heater to replace the older unit we had. I finally settled on this Hegger HG163 50 W heater and after learning how to remove the lower half shell to clean the heater I began the setup. It was really simple to turn on and set the digital heater control. The temperature came up in a reasonable time and the controller indicated the tank temperature. Next, was to determine the overnight control when the home temp drops by several degrees. Checking the controller the first thing the following morning showed it reading the exact set temperature. I am very impressed with this heater and would buy another one should we set up another aquarium. There are several versions of different wattages for different sized aquarium tanks.

Stable and easy to control but bulky/controller cable very short
This heater keeps the temperature very stable and the protective cage is a nice feature, as it allows my betta fish to swim around and under it without risking any harm.I have only two gripes:1.) It is very bulky despite being advertised for 1-5 gallons. Even in a 5 gallon tank it would look big; however, more surface area means more efficient heating so the pros/cons even out.2.) The length of cable between the temperature controller and the plug is annoyingly short, like bordering on making it useless depending on where you have your surge protector. I mean itâs like six inches. I ended up just sticking the controller directly to the surge protector. -1 star for this reason. Give us a full length cable, the fact that the heater is smaller doesnât mean the tank is magically closer to the outlet.

So far so good. They work. They are accurate. I cannot say anything yet about longevity but they are already better than topfin or aqueon.

Sorry in good conscience I can not give this a good review because it was in a 5 gallon tank and not once did it heat the tank up temp said it was 80 but my thermostat said the water was actually 75 not good for my beloved betta buddy not cool! Thank god I have another heater and it also read the water was at 75 will not recommend this ever ! Itâs possible I got a defective product glad I didnât put him back in the tank
